Car: 1996 Spi, stage 3 tuned

On my way home yesterday, going aprox. 80kph in 4.th, I was greeted with a sudden ticking noise. A few minutes later, while in the process of working out what it was, a strong smell of something or other burning (think it was either oil or coolant) appeared. Then, about a minute later, the engine started coughing, and a large amount of white-ish smoke started billowing out of the wheel arch. Stopped immediately. Smoke kept on coming out for quite a while.

So....

Any ideas as to what I have done?

There were no warning lights on, and the temperature gauge was just below the white line...

Could it have been steam? From a burst radiator hose?

have you checked all the fluid levels? (Water/oil etc)

White steam would certainly indicate a water related problem.....but not sure why it would cause the engine to cough.....
