To be honest, I've fitted three 'stage one' kits over the years and I've never had them setup on the rollers.. each and every time they've run perfectly with a little tweaking, with biscuit-brown plugs.

I think initially you should double check the carb is functioning properly, eg unworn jet (buy new unless you're on a very tight budget), float chamber needle-valve working as it should, no play in the carb spindle (can cause unexplained lean-running at various engine speeds), dashpot topped up properly and carb piston vacuum checking out ok.

I have to say that a rolling road is not always the answer. My Dad manages to set Arthur mini up much better than the rolling road we took him too. It might help, but all I'm saying is don't pin all your hopes on it, or at least have an ask around for one that comes highly recommended.

You say you have a stage 1 kit fitted but what have you fitted exactly?

I am no expert but I know these things are designed to work as long as you fit the full system kit and not the odd bits.

eg my car ran awful until I fitted the maniflow ex manifold then ran great.

As I say I am no expert.

:)

I had to get another needle too.

Theres a few roads localish to me and im from Burton-on-Trent, so not too far from you. ;) I took mine to Aldon automotive, its somewhere in/near birmingham!

Theres one in Alfreton as well (inbetween Derby and Chesterfield) called Peter Burgess, the guy knew his stuff, but called my Mini crap :)

There are ways to help but there also seems to be a large element of luck. I have fitted a stage 1 kit this morning to my 998, apart from the exhaust and manifold, no two bits came from the same place. I used an AAA needle and it was instantly spot on on the gastester. Took it out for a spin and it feels perfect with no flat spots. Do I take it to a rolling road? Not sure its worth it, I will keep a check on everything and see how how it goes. A few years back I fitted one to my old 1098 clubby and it was a damn nightmare to get running right. What have I done differently this time? Nothing that I can tell.

If you have not changed the exhaust then you still have he restrictive stock one there, meaning it probably runs no different.

Whats are you called in the rest of a stage one kit, just a k&n filter?, you cant get more air in unless you help it get out as well. :ohno:

I didn't word that very well, I meant that apart from the exhaust and manifold no two bits came from the same place, not that I fitted a kit apart from the exhaust. Too many commas from me Doh! I got the exhaust and manifold (Maniflow) from someone advertising in practical classics, the filter is a second hand K and N, the inlet manifold is a second hand minispares one, the needle and ram pipe came from someone on here. Total cost about £60.

£20 for a full system, not new but not far off. I only went for the manifold as I had another system I was planning on using. It was sat on the exhaust when I got there, the guy said £20 so I jumped at it thinking it was a bargain for the manifold. As I carried out the manifold he followed me with the rest. I said to him I only wanted the manifold, he replied that we wouldn't split and it was £20 or nothing. I couldn't believe my ears. I asked him if he was sure and he said if it wasn't gone by the end of the week it was going down the skip! I grinned all the back to Tamworth. RESULT :-)
