In effect, you have received in full the benefit of a service that you have not yet paid for in full.

Well not strictly, I've paid for the duration of cover between the start of the policy and the time the vehicle was stolen.... after that point I no longer have a vehicle to cover, so shouldn't keep paying for it for another 11 months!

I can see how it's a normal state of affairs and that my insurer have acted within the terms & conditions of my policy and the law but that still doesn't make it morally right!

Morally right and insurer should never be in the same sentence :)

Chris, please don't take this to be flippant or argumentative, and I'm happy for us to "agree to dissagree" but if you turn the scenario around and the insurer said okay you've only paid 1/12th of your premium therefore we will only pay you 1/12th of your claim you can see how it could look from the other side?

Looking at it from the insurance companies point of view...

They 'sold' you an insurance policy for 1 year, during the first month of that policy you make a claim as the insured item has been stolen, and then you want to cancel the policy...

Think yourself lucky they have not got their fraud team active on this.

You can cancel the policy, but there will be a cancellation fee, unless that is documented as to what it is, you may find they can charge whatever they like.

I think it's best we agree to disagree :P

Yes cambiker it's Lancaster Insurance and the DD scheme is via Premium Credit.

Another thing which makes me want to pay the rest of the premium even less is the fact I paid an excess on the policy in order to make the claim, and it now feels that they're punishing me for daring to have my car nicked and me make a claim! As if it's my fault??

Guessworks: I can see myself how it looks having had the car stolen a month after renewing the insurance but a car is just as likely to be stolen in the first month of a policy as in the last month... I'm pretty sure they had some sort of "team" on it because they took two months to investigate it when they originally said it would take 2 - 3 weeks, and they even sent a Claims Investigator round to the house to take a statement from me containing details I'd already given :) P.S. I dont know whether I should think myself lucky or not, I hope you aren't trying to insinuate there is something dodgy about what happened... like I said and several people have said to me, the car is just as likely to have been nicked in the first month of the policy as any other month during the course of it. What annoys me very much is that some scumbag is either driving around in my car or knows where it is and I'm the one being punished for it, not him/her!!

No not at all....

just my cynical side taking over for a while...

but usually, if someone gets a car stolen, they usually replace it... therefore need continued insurance...

plus your now insuring a car which the insurance company own, not you :)

I've decided I'm putting my next mini on hold until a) I move to a nicer area and b) I have a garage to store him/her in :)

Its logical, say one of my mates made his Escort disappear two months after starting his monthly insurance. They then take the years from you, however they usually take it off the payout settlement.

Suprised you didn't know this when you started the monthly.

Believe me, start saving now for the next premium 'because they're really going to to do their best to shaft you for money next time, like i said before, your dealings will now be passed to Premium credit as Lancaster will already have been paid by them. Getting money back from PC is like building snowmen on Hell, not an easy task. Good luck!

if you pay the full amount off then you can cancel the insurance and get the % back.

It won't make any difference to the reality of the situation but Chris has a point.

His insurers agreed to indemnify his risk for the year in exchange for a fee. That was the contract when he took the policy out.

If he had a bump a week for the year they would be obliged to pay up.

If he replaced his stolen Mini, like for like, they'd continue to be liable. Since he's decided not to replace the car, he's actually done them a favour by making a future claim extremely unlikely, it would be fair to recognise that - he's reduced the risk they agreed to cover, they should reduce the fee.

I do understand their extra suspicion if the policy had only just been taken out. It could be something happened to the car before it was insured. Then again it's just as likely they were dragging their heels because it wasn't costing them anything to inconvenience you.

I had paid mine for the year, mine got nicked, took them 5 months to agree a settlement, in the last month of the policy i replaced the car and was able to swap my cover to it

It'll probably be a while till I get another Mini anyway and even then I will be paying monthly, I expect the premium to be higher but I can't do much about that.

Have you asked them if they'll freeze the policy, that way you can insure another car on it eventually?

Think about it this way, if you had paid for the policy for the year in one payment for example £600 (£50 a month)

If you have the mini stolen after the month you can go back to them and say oh i want £550 back as im not going to use the car anymore...

Its like buying something on finance, if you was to sell it you would still have to pay the rest off...
