Fair enough we all have different oppinions on things, otherwise we wouldnt be human,no probs with ebc yellow pads myself only standard type black ones, obviously it depends on the pad and disc combo how well any brakes work.Yes I have used most all of the e bc range, and prefer to stay well clear of them now, in preferrance I use Mintex and or Delphi which for a standard pad offer much better braking than any of the colours.
You could also ask the same for drums...... at the end of the day if you drive within the capability of the vehicle (ie slowly) then no vented are not required, thi sis not a turn around on my part as I will continue to use vented on my own cars and advise customers to follow suit when I feel it necessary, ie high power or simply a fast driver...
so for fast rd use you need vented,on track with race pads you dont?
If the yellowpads work good on both this is a bit of a contradiction.
Im sure there are many people using solid discs which are more than adequate,as long as the combination of parts is compatible.
i only use the vented set up cause it was on the car when i got it many yrs ago,and the braking is great.
as for keeping discs cool, braking efficiancy is worse than if slightly too hot as the pads tend to grab when cold.
there is also such a thing as having brakes that are too powerful, you dont want your tyres locking up,you need just the right amount, too little or to much is not good.
I dont think you can compare drums as these were barely adequate for a standard mini back in the day of empty roads.
Solid vs vented is a bit different, they are both up to the job of stopping a mini, powerful or not,as for modern cars i tend to find the brakes are so sensitive and powerful that you actually have to be careful how hard you press, without the abs and assosciated braking aids the tyres would lock up.
my 1.8 97 golf has solid discs and this is far heavier and capable of higher speeds than most minis and the brakes are brilliant.
before you ask,no i dont drive like grandad, most of my driving is b road blasts acrsoss the moors with lots of heavy braking and accelerating.and the odd trackday.
the vented turbo setup is good for the pose factor and they work, but necessary?i dont think so
and yes i have drviven a mini with solid discs aswell, with greenstuff pads ebc discs and they were more than up to the job.
