sounds like you brought a Crap rad to be fair

if the factory fitted rad works only replace it with the same rad!!

The 2 core isn't a competition rad, and it's sold by one of the most reliable Mini parts suppliers in the UK, hence i bought it with such willingness. And it appears a lot of people have found them to be very effective rads, so this is a fairly isoloated problem.

Upon closer inspection, i can see there is a subtle difference to the shape of the fan blades depending on which way round you fit it. I have no time to fiddle with the car for the next few days, but i'm only going to be travelling one mile up the road in that time, so it should be fine. Saturday/Sunday will consist of a full system flush and cleaning and switching the fan back around to its correct position.

Thats your problem i think, turn the fan round and all should be good

See this post from the start of this topic!

You have just been wasting time, money and energy, If you had taken this advice your problem could have been solved nearly two weeks ago! :(

I took advice from my dad first, who claimed the fan was the right way around. He's extremely knowledgeable about car mechanics and worked on dozens of Minis in his time, so i was hardly going to argue! :D

Is your fan the right way around? If switching the fan around doesn't work for me i'm getting a new water pump. The harsh winter may have damaged it, i'm not sure.

THe fan is the right way round. It also has an electric fan on the other side pulling air through.
As yours everything else is new.
New pump, radiator, hoses, head gasket, thermostat blanking sleeve, oil cooler.
Timing is right fuelling is slightly rich.

Still getting too hot

how do you know it's getting much too hot apart from the gauge reading? Is it boiling and throwing coolant out of the cap?

Yes, the coolant is getting extremely hot, much hotter than before, and steam comes out of the overflow pipe.

Just a quick question...Is this fan the right way around?

It's just that the fan is blasting hot air towards the engine block.

It'll blow the same which ever way its fitted! but yes thats how mine is

And sorry to tell you, but the fan in that photo is the wrong way round and will be losing between 15% and 20% of its cooling ability.
The angle of the blades must increase towards the radiator.
With the fan on back-to-frone a large engine will tend to overheat.
I reckon about 10% of all minis have the fan on the wrong way round.

you must be really peed off by now. Its aggravating not finding the cause of a problem. I genuinely hope that just turning the fan round will cure it.If its running say 95 deg then 20% increased cooling from turning fan round will bring it way down.I am sceptical as my 1275 has it on like yours and I have been concerned that it isnt hot enough, original rad too.My guage could be wrong but it doesnt seem at all hot.I havent read all the posts but has it had block flush in as an idea.

Have you checked the pump yet?

In some cheap pumps, the impellers have been known to snap off - Therefore wouldn't be moving the coolant round the system at all.

Flush and switching the fan around will happen on Saturday, and yes, at the moment it's running at around 95 degrees (not quite red on the gauge, but getting close). Didn't you originally say that turning the fan around won't make a difference?

The pump is the factory fitted standard one, so it would be of decent quality.

I'll post the results of switching the fan around on Saturday, but at the moment it seems the user "I could eat a Horse haha" needs more help, as his fan is the right way around and his car is still overheating.
