Right. What's left to check? Flushing the whole system out, and replacing the water pump just in case that's the issue (which i doubt, seems to be working fine). I may end up having to replace the head gasket, if there's a small leak i can't see...

If i did remove the head and replaced the gasket, would i need to get the car RR'd again?

Bump. This is my daily, i need advice fairly rapidly :D

It just DOESN'T make sense. As soon as i put this new rad in, the cooling immediately got worse.

Did you ever check the temp sender?

Yes, it's reading temps correctly. I've established that the engine is getting genuinely hot, it's not a gauge error. Possible sediment blockage in the pipes?

I'm considering it. The only possible causes now are water pump failure, my head gasket is on it's way out, or there's some sort of semi-blockage in the system.

I'll try flushing out the system one last time, then take it to a garage. Does anyone know a decent (and value for money) Mini garage in the Hertfordshire area?

how do you know it's getting much too hot apart from the gauge reading? Is it boiling and throwing coolant out of the cap?

Yes, the coolant is getting extremely hot, much hotter than before, and steam comes out of the overflow pipe.

Just a quick question...Is this fan the right way around?

It's just that the fan is blasting hot air towards the engine block.

It'll blow the same which ever way its fitted! but yes thats how mine is

WRONG!!! THAT FAN IS ON ROUND THE WRONG WAY

I have been having the same problem recently.
Car was fine during the winter but now it is always hot. It also has the same 2 core minispares radiator which replaced the standard unit.
Cannot get it to cool down. as yours everything is new. Pump, sender, head gasket, radiator. The engine itself is a new build. It is running with a thermostat blanking sleeve in and also has a manual switced electric fan
I am going to try the old standard radiator at the weekend to see if it improves.
I also ordered a small motorbike radiator off ebay to fit as an auxiliary rad if it doesnt work. It only cost 99p and it comes with a small fan. It should fit just under the alternator.

I am not feeling to convinced about these minispares radiators!!!

WRONG!!! THAT FAN IS ON ROUND THE WRONG WAY

This could be my saving grace. I'm going to try this tomorrow, and if it works, i will write you a love ballad :( I will be ecstatic if the cooling goes back to normal after switching it around.

EDIT: Just so everyone knows, my dad was the one who took the fan out and put it back like that. And for over a week he's been scolding me for buying "poor quality copied parts".

sounds like you brought a Crap rad to be fair

if the factory fitted rad works only replace it with the same rad!!

we had the same problem in my mates rover 100

put a Competion rad on it and it over heated every 5 miles or 30mins of running

we did everything to the engine and nothing worked!!

but if we booted along the motorways all day the 1,8vvc never ever over heated! but in town it did the competion rads aren't ment for road use to be fair

the 100's been wrote off now :( brilliatly smashed into by a lorry

a lorry full of car crashed into it when it was parked! in gear and hand brake on and it was shot 55ft along the street into a jag ;] damn that was a funny day!

As said, your fan is on the wrong way. When you get it off, give it a clean and you should find the words "Engine Side" written on the smooth side of the fan middle. As Doug Lawson said, this makes a difference to how well the fan works as when you look at the blades end on you will see that they are shaped like an aeroplane wing so if your cooling system is marginal, it could make a difference.

It's strange that you are having problems, I have the Mini Spares 2 core rad with an 82c stat on my 1380/126hp Mini and it keeps the engine cool under normal road use. The only time it has got hot is charging up the mountain roads near the Nurburgring and even then it didn't overheat. It maybe that your engine has other problems that you haven't found yet?

Thats your problem i think, turn the fan round and all should be good

See this post from the start of this topic!

You have just been wasting time, money and energy, If you had taken this advice your problem could have been solved nearly two weeks ago! :(

And sorry to tell you, but the fan in that photo is the wrong way round and will be losing between 15% and 20% of its cooling ability.
The angle of the blades must increase towards the radiator.
With the fan on back-to-frone a large engine will tend to overheat.
I reckon about 10% of all minis have the fan on the wrong way round.

10%, is that because people mess about with them or because they didnt biuld them properly.
also could someone explain the procedure for taking off and turning round. mine is that way round aswell and should turn it round, so i have to take the rad out (hope not!!!)
