Right guys an girls i am 17 and i am doing DT at A level an i need some help with my year 13 work.

All i really need is ideas to help me get started.

This was our brief,"Speed and movement are features that have always been a source of excitement and exhilaration. Using these two themes design and make a product of your choice which demonstrates your interpretation of the themes."

so i was thinking around the idea of personal transport. i was just wondering what products do you think i can look at to do my product analysis. and also what type of product i could make overall

cheers kalum

Are the themes "speed and Movement" or "Excitement and exhilaration"? I assume the former even though they are stated as features.

All I would say is that personal transport is generally necessary, and necessary things are not generally exciting or exhilarating. You need to think along the lines of a product for leisure or competition, whether this be a vehicle for racing maybe or a sports item.

Products to analyse would include racing cars/bikes/boats/planes etc, maybe simulator type machines which include movement and visual trickery. Theme park rides (although you may have trouble making a roller coaster!). I think you are probably looking at designing and making a game of some sort that involves fast movement to create an exhilerating feeling when played.

Kite buggy is good! Leisure activity... and potentially fast!

Not personal transport.

Ive started my year 13 DT coursework today , and I wish I had a design brief like yours, as we can do anything we like , creating our own design brief, which so far is seeming very hard work lol ;)

Ive been thinking all day, but have yet to come up with an idea

Yeah, our school does this too! We can make anything, so long as we can make it on school, because for some stupid reason im not allowed to use my workshop at home, which is much better equipped than schools ;)

Im making a dashboard for my mini!

dell_boy: no we did get given a list but this was the best one in my opinion as the others were all based on environmental stuff which i am not really a fan of

miniluke: i was thinking of a more recreational slant as personal transport would generally have to have lots of rules and regulations. i was thinking of something similar to a quad bike or buggy type thing but the problem with that is it is a very tried and tested design so i guess i'll keep thinking. and i like your idea of a game type thing.

cheers for your help guys... i'll keep you posted with my progress

Design and build something like a Toylander?
Not that I'm sure who you'd do it for...

Gives you metal work, wood work, electrics, (use a starter motor to power it maybe). etc, etc.

I have decided on a bass guitar project

Careful, one of my friends made a guitar for his A-level project, spent so long shaping the body he never finished it.
Also, the frets are really hard to get right, you can make it fretless, but are you ever going to play that?

I will do my best at it, one of my teacher has a full workshop with the right equipment I need to get a quick finish on the body so I will do my best at it. All I need now is my licence to be able to get to the workshop otherwise i will have to get a lift off someone. Frets are a different problem that I think I will have to worry about when I come to it. It will be finished whatever happens
