I'm fitting a battery isolator in the boot - ( about 25 quid from Deamon Tweeks) The boot is quite hard to break into (compared with the rest of the car).

I'm fitting a switch on the signal wire to the starter and hiding it behind the dashboard as suggested earlier in the thread.

Also I'm fitting a dummy alarm flashing LED (approx 60p from Maplin) to the dashboard. I'm wiring the live to a permanent live and the earth to an ignition live, that way when the ignition is on the light doesn't flash, but when it is off it flashes.

It is pointless fitting a good alarm as it will be really easy to bypass as the wiring on the car is so simple.

Obviously it will still be possible to steal the car and nothing can stop a thief with a truck ... but hopefully it will deter the petty TWOCer.

IMHO !
I would change all of that, as you have just told all the internet what you security system is for your mini.

It's a sad world we live in and mini's are more likely to be nicked by people into them.
Seriously please don't tell people what/how you secure your mini.

A cut off switch / a good alarm / Steering wheel/ gear stick hand brake lock type thing. I would say is the way to go.

Length of chain around the front wishbone and a sturdy structral house post is my anti theft device

Good luck hot wiring it though as the starter and battery are both missing lol

When I had a Mini I wired one side of the coil to earth via a switch hidden under the dash. I can't remember which side of the coil though, but when the switch was closed i.e. one side of the coil connected to earth, the car would just turn over and not start. This would only put off the opportunist though.

Another one is a battery cut off switch. There's one called DIS-CAR-NECT which is about £12 from Minispares which breaks your battery earth strap with a screw-out knob so you can simply unscrew it and take it with you when you leave. Again, this would only put off an opportunist.

Alongside all the above you could try wire up a camera and have it on say 24 hour record where it records the last 24 hours and keeps taping over the last day. At least then if it does grow legs and walk off one day you might have an idea who took it. I wish I'd done that now.

heres mine, battery cut-off switch, fuel and ignition switches, tracker, and its chained up everynight, both front wheels to steel fences, and a chain through both back wheels to a hoop in the ground, and a security light on the wall, yes, youve probably guessed it, i do live in a shitty area, where yobs are likely to nick it, although they probably wont be able to start it, as the other security feature is a choke, lol

it is a bit of a bugger if im in a hurry, but at least itll always be there, or if it is taken i can track it and get it back, lol

what take the gear stick out? my gator isnt screwed down, so i just slide it up the gear stick (ooer..) and twist the thing that holds the gearstick on the linkage thing, lift it out, hey presto!

its funny when i get in it, put the harness on, go to start it, realise theres no gearstick, have to go back indoors, get asked "what have you forgotten" i reply, my cars nob, lmao!
