Hi have had this project for nearly a year now however due to other things going on i havent been able to spend the time on it. I am off uni now for the summer so am trying to spend as much time on it as possible.

I will try and keep this updated as much as possible and hopefully some people will take some interest in it.

So far i have stripped one mini of all its parts and am now working on the shell which will have everything put into/onto it. I have stripped most of the upper body of paint back to bare metal. Still have the doors, boot and underneath to do. I have also now cut off the front panel.

I will upload some pictures later on tonight.

take it u have done alot of grinding then :D

I used nitromors and a paint and rust remover attachment for the drill. This seems to work pretty well and am happy with the results so far. Has shown up more rust than i was hoping for but so far it still seems pretty solid.

There is quite a lot of rust around the front headlights but I think that I will be able to patch it up. I also had the idea to use some headlight bowls backwards for the headlight rings. Does anybody know if this will work? (hope that makes sense)

I am also replacing the floor pans as they have dents where they have been jacked wrong in the past. I have bought new panels but is it best to just replace where the damage is or to replace the whole panel?

Cheers in advance

Just a bit of an update. I have cut out my drivers side floor and have decided i will probably overlap the panel rather than butt welding. This is still open to be change however looks the best way at the minute.

I have also removed the steering column top dash rail and some other bits and pieces.

Welding should be coming soon

Whey!

I've got a chelsea too, had it for about 4 years now. Nice to see another one pop up, its wierd that i've been on mini forums for a few years and i havent seen a chelsea ever, and all of a sudden 2 more pop up in a year.

Best of luck with this.

There don't seem to be very many about. I am tempted to change it from the chelsea colours though. so will not look like a chelsea when it is finished. Is this a good idea? I am thinking of maybe yellow with a black roof stripes and wheels am still deciding though as its quite a big decision.

Me and dad built the garage before i started and I am surprised at how good it actually is. Have a big shelf down one end with bits on and a workbench up the other end with wire racks above for more storage. When you next around that you could have a look?

going to start practicing the welding tomorrow or Thursday i think. Will practice alot before i get onto the car though. Got some offcuts from an engineering place to practice on first.

Well i bought mine as just the shell so didnt come with any other original bits. the only other bit i have is the rear seats. The engine and most other parts all came from another car i had before.

Hi, Have realised i have been very vague with this project so far so thought i would add some more pictures and information on my plans.

Being a student i am trying to build this car on as much of a budget as possible. Therefore i will be doing the work myself with the help of friends aswell. I am going to work around the top part of the car sorting out any welding that needs doing and then prep ready for painting.I bought myself a compressor so i can spray it myself however for the last coat i think i will head to my friends workshop where he has a large compressor. I also have a mig welder already which i have been practicing with but need some more practice before i get onto the car.

I had an accident in a previous mini and after finding alot of rust decided to sell on the shell and salvage any bits to use towards this project.

This is how the shell started out. It looks pretty solid so far. There is some major rust around the headlights. Some minor bits around the front and rear windows, in the boot. There is also some rust at the front of the O/S sill however have not got the paint off to see the damage yet. also on the inside of the engine bay there are some rust patches which i will weld some patches into.

I have bought Koni adjustable shocks for all round the car.

I have a new front panel already bought too. It had some light surface rust when i bought it but i have now tidied this up.
Posted Image

I bought some weller 10inch wheels however didnt think about my 8.4 brake setup so I may use some superlite 12x5 wheels i already have instead (2 need replacing)

W&P arches to go on.

So far i have stripped one mini completely and with my new mini shell i have cut off the front panel and cut out one floor pan. I have also stripped the toop half of the car of paint. All it needs is some wet and dry and then will be ready for paint minus the bits which need welding.

As a colour scheme i am thinking of yellow with a black roof, black stripes and black wheels possibly with a pinstripe. I would also like to debumper the car and possibly smooth off the bootlid.

hope this information will make my thread a bit more appealing :teehee:

Hey. Did some more work on the mini today.
Had a few holes in my A panel which i have welded up.

There was a bit of rust on the back window which i have rubbed back to metal and added some weld on top then ground back.

I have also welded up a few holes in the front wing.

All the welds still need some tidying up but not bad for the first bit of welding on the car considering i have never done it before. Only had a little bit of practice on a few scrap bits of steel.

I also rubbed back my rear quarter panel and roof ready for paint.

Hopefully i will get a bit of paint on tommorow and some more welding done! Will add another update tomorrow :)

Looks like a good project!

Maybe practice your welding on some scrap steel before you tackle anything structural, it doesn't take long to get the hang of it :).
