1275 Rover Cooper
1995

I have heard recently that fully synthetic oil can damage our engines / seals etc. Nit sure if this is true or not.

I have bought Castrol Magnatec 10-40 part synthetic which was listed at Halfrauds for my car, what do people think of Castrol and is it really suitable for my car?

Thanks

Steve.

I was under the impression minis ran on 20W/50 as it has to run through the sump aswell
Not sure about yours though , as its an injection

Halfords do a "classic" car oil in a metal can - I swicthed from Mobil 1 to this a while back, its a bit thicker and the correct SAE rating for the A-Series engine.

I've noticed Fully Syn oil is usually a lot thinner than standard mineral oil - most newer cars are running it.

I run standard mineral oil but then again mine gets changed quite oftern.

Correct me if i'm wrong But I was under the impression that 10/w40 was what was recommended by the factory but wasn't actually a good match, it was just to keep costs down at the factory, as I'm sure many mini owners will agree mineral 20/w50 is the best thing to use in any standard mini engine. I use morriss 20/w40 mineral in my 98 mpi cooper.

Most people will agree to stay away from any synthetic, just use mineral, however a few people do say it is ok. grades of oil is less important (unless you are putting stupidly thin oil in...): more important is the frequency of oil changes - best is every 3000 miles or 1 year.

To throw my two pence in - i use 20w50 unipart mineral in all of mine; ive had 998s 1275 carbs, 1275 MPis, 1380s etc...

Ryan.

all to do with the grade of oil...

mineral or synthetic, 20/50 and you'll be good to go. its just that 20/50 full synth is on the pricey side.

All Minis used to be recommended to use a mineral 20w50 by the manufacturer. The reason for this is that the engine oil is also the gearbox oil and the gearbox, ideally, needs an EP80 gear oil. A mineral 20w50 is the best compromise.
The gearbox in later Minis is no different in basic design from ther early ones, so a 20w50 is still needed.

20w/50 is best for older cars or cars with higher mileage, the thickness makes up for engine wear and stuff,my fiesta is recommended 5w/30 but im now running 10w/40 as its clocking up high mileage
