It's not quite an old wives tale. I've seen turbocharged Porsche engines where the original Ally block has been bored out to get a decent capacity, and then lined with stainless steel sleeves. Then the gaps are filled with an epoxy to get the block back to "solid"! I've also seen them run without the epoxy. 2k miles later, it looked as though someone had filled the bore with C4 (and for a same spec motor as guys who run with the filler, and have plenty of miles onder their belts).i'm not so sure about all that bore flex talk to be honest, sounds like an old wives tale to me.
Granted that is on an ally block, where we are obviously talking cast iron, but equally that can lead to it's own issues such as porosity, which means any small blemish is more likely to propgate into cracking under higher pressures, and equally any small deflection of the cylinder wall is also more likely to expose a weakness. Of course, all this is theory anyway!
Not that I'm too worried anyhow, as this will be the route I end up going to get some ponies out of an A-series!
