Ok i was driving home earlier and all of a sudden CLUNK. i was doing about 30mph or so but it felt like the wheel or one side of the car was jamming. i'm a new driver and happened about an hour ago on a country road! eeek! This is my first car and i love mini's!! Anyway, i stopped the vehicle and then it kinda resumed normal. However, wen i moved it (any speed) it sort of rattling coming from side of the car and when i was driving it did it a further two times!

Anyone have any ideas what this might be? How much will it cost etc.?

Thankyou guys.

Regards,
Tim

Thanks

It could be a number of things with a numerous way/price to fix.

If you FELT something then i would check under the car visually, see anything hanging etc.

Also check the wheels for play, by jacking up and holding at 12 n 6, 3 n 9.

Heres my list of what i SUSPECT it could be.

Subframe mounts - Normally split, would cause banging or grinding which you may feel - upgrade to solid mounts or replace mount.

Exhaust mount - Rubber bush or holder broken, exhaust hanging, banging gear selector or floor - replace bush

Play in wheel components - steering may be affected, knocking sounds - would require further investigation.

Do you have disc brakes?! It maybe a stone that has lodged itself in the brake assembley somehow.

If its affecting the steering that would pretty much rule out an exhaust mount.

As Jordie says, jack up each side of the car (put jack under the subframe not the floor), and put your hands on the wheel at 12 and 6 and then 3 and 9, and see if the wheel wobbles at all, this would indicate balljoint or wheel bearings.
