you offer the sump guard up to the subframe and get it looking right, i.e not touching the sump and square on. then you need to drill the subframe where the sump gueards bolt holes are.

its really not that difficult, only problem i found was getting the bolts into the holes with the nuts on due to space

yeh its just a matter of offering the sump guard up to the subframe, marking where the holes will be and drilling them.

and as daves said its annoying getting the bolts on and off due to the limited space :D

best way would be to put threadded inserts into the holes drilled so you don't need to worry about the nuts the other side of the subframe. something like a rivnut tool would allow you to do this :mmkay:

Whoever gets round to doing it first should take aload of pics and write up a how to guide for the FAQ section - As looks like it'd be helpful to alot of people judging by the amount of people asking about them.

what about welding the nut onto the subframe once you have them in place, then you wont have to fiddle about trying to keep a grasp on the nut.

im dropping my subframe out soon and ill buy a sump guard then but i was thinking on lining it all up and then drilling the holes and tapping them to the bolt size

or do captive nuts on the oppiste side? how do people who have rally mini's fit them haha

Right....fitted my sump guard today and I have to say it was pretty easy...although I have cheated a bit....

Firstly, apologies for the lack of pics but I completely forgot!!

Anyway, it really is as simple as offering up the sump guard to the subframe and then getting a mate/jack/pile of books to hold it accurately in place while you draw circles through the holes, I used a gold permanent pen but only because it stood out well against the rust!! I'm sure tippex would work too!! Then I pilot drilled through the holes and then fully drilled them.

However, instead of pushing the bolts upwards I have them facing downwards, and although it is still difficult to tighten them it is mugh easier than if it was the other way around. As for how far they stick out, well mine are about perfect and only stick out abit but any longer and they too might start to catch on the ground.

Anyway, after putting the bolts through the subframe and then tightening the nuts I realised it didn't clear the sump properly so I just kept adding washers until I had about 5mm - 6mm clearance, which I think is perfect.

One problem I did have however is that if you face the bolts downwards like I did, when trying to fit the sump guard the washers will just fall off!! So I shaped bluetack into a ring to hold them temporarily while I lined up the sump guard and then it was a piece of piddle!!

If anyone would like me to upload a photo of how it looks now just ask.

Good Luck!!

I put the bolts down from above, and put a nut and washer on them. Then... put the sumpguard on and put another nut on. Doing it like this meant I didnt have to get a spanner onto the top of the bolt once the sumpguard was on. Worked well.
