Just a quick note to add in some information. When she was tested at her last MoT (in March), her C02 reading was only .0533% which is incredibly low (she hasn't bee adjusted since), this seems to imply she is running lean as well??
White spark plugs means it's running too lean. Never seen any white buildup there, though, are you sure the head gasket is fine?

So update on my mini's spluttering problem. I've tweaked the fuel air mix so that it's set richer but now there seems to be a hissing sound and slight burning smell when I try and start her. Any ideas what this is? I'm now too scared to drive her.
Also I'm starting to think about getting the engine reconditioned or replaced because reliability. Which is best reconditioned or new and can you recommend trusted places. Also what kind of figure would I be looking at for a 1330 engine?
Many thanks!

What kind of burning smell? Like burnt rubber, petrol, oil or plastic/wiring?

I've tweaked the fuel mix back and the smell seems to have gone but it seemed more of an electrical (but it's always hard to tell).

Hi I have a similar problem, not so severe as yours but mine seems a but juddery and feels like it misses a little on low revs and feels like you need to put your foot to the floor to smooth it out! Mine was professionally tuned and was fine but last mot the emissions were too high! So they adjusted the mixture idle etc and this is why I'm getting the problems now! so i would guess it is a mixture problem in my opinion?
This is making a bit more sense now ... her timing has been out ever since we have owned her (due to having no vacuum advancer), and she was set to a rich mix. At her last MOT her mix was set right back for the emissions and didn't need setting back too rich to still run well, ever since then we have had the occasional misfire though, and recently the problems I've outlined happened.
Tempted to get her to a good garage fairly locally and have a new dizzy put in with vacuum advancer (lets face it she needs that regardless), and see how much that solves things!
