really? when i had my house at uni with 20m band, virgin kept throttling back out connection, were at times struggling to get 1meg, of course when we phoned up to complain it would misteriously shoot back up in a short while after. They said they didnt have any explanation but strange how it would only go up after we took to the phone

nope, just a normal residential house, 5 rooms but alot of the time wasnt full, people were usualy out etc, it wasnt a huge area and apparently had line problems at times when people were working, it did go through a phase of being in that bad state but it was very annoying when it was like being on 56k again

I have Sky, but the connection is very slow....changing to Virgin as used to cable (had in in the States). Just hoping I made the right choice.

My first modem was 4600bps and when 14400, 33000 and 56kbs came that was fast!!!

Yeah Mini93, i had Virgin last year at uni too.

With 7 of us in the house we figured for £6 each we'd go for their hallowed new 50meg optical broadband, TV and phone package.

I poo you not, but for about 1/2 of the time we were contracted we didnt get 2 meg. All downloads are throttled massively. For example if you're downloading a film from a P2P, you will get no more than 20kbps actual internet connection through the modem, let alone to the actual P2P program and file. We were on the phone to them literally every 3 days complaining about the appalling connection (not the download throttling, we accepted that that would happen).

We had engineers out, the whole shebang, and the best thing they could come up with was - yeah um you've got 50meg but teh wireless router we provide is a G router and can only give out 20meg at a go.

How can they provide a wireless router thats incapable of delivering the broadband you're paying for. Whats worse is that you pay for 50meg but the most we ever recieved down the lines was 25 i think. Now i know thats still a lot, but divide it by the seven people living in the house and you end up with 2 meg each for running the internet, and gaming too. After that it pretty much shuts down.

USELESS COMPANY

At home, i have TalkTalk, and they're equally shocking.

Their modem they provide has broken 4 times in the last year, but they can't give you help with fixing it because they're not licensed to or something by the manufacturer, so you've then got to speak to the manufacturer on a premium rate number who put you on hold for half an hour before telling you its not the boxes fault, its the ISP.

Downloads are impossible as they have some kind of block of P2P software on their lines, and if you try your internet is effectively shut off for the duration of which you are attempting to download anything.

All the customer service people are Indian and (now im not racist) but you cannot understand 90% of what they are saying, and they just say the same thing over and over again.

You go through the same procedures time after time - switch off the box, leave it for 30 secs, switch it back on - does it work sir? No clourse it bl**dy doesnt you fool we've already tried this twice. ARGH

Can you tell im getting quite irate?? :)

Honestly, when they work out they need to send a new modem, guess how long you have to wait - I quote 'The delivery will be sent out tomorrow first thing' 'Oh good, how long will it take to arrive?' 'Delivery times are between 6 to 14 working days'

Appalling. How can it take that long to post a box?

I'm switching to BT next week to their 20meg package, so hopefully that will be better.

I'm with Virgin, can't say I even noticed when they upgraded the speed from 2 to 10 mb. Suppose it depends on what you use it for. I also have 3G, from Three, on my phone and that's fast enough (streams Iplayer) when used as a modem. Unlimited downloads and no line rental are the reasons I stick with Virgin.
