Hi,

Have dismantled my Mini completely and am working on the front end at the moment - have stripped swivel hubs, etc. and have a big pile of parts for refurbishing...

Today I started on the drive shafts... I thought I had CV joints at one end and pot joints at the other...

Well, after cleaning off all the filth I do indeed have a CV at one end but I have this on the other...

Posted Image

I think it is the inner member and ball cage of the pot joint - but how does it come off?

I want to replace both joints as the balls were rusted and pitted on one side...

Thanks in advance for your help...

It comes off the same way the outer joint does.....a sharp 'tap' to the inner - causing it to jump it's circlip

Thanks... one of the cages actually fell off the end shown!

But I'd like to replace the inner member itself... doesn't it come off?

Thanks guys... I whacked one off although it was quite rusty...

The other side is rusted tight - I've drilled a hole in the cap and filled it up with penetrating oil...

Kez - I know I can get a new drive shaft but it is ~£60 I don't need to spend! :)

do you have a link to a replacement inner cv joint all i could find when i looked was the inner pot part that goes in to the gearbox and not the bit that sits on the drive shaft itself

Hi,

I had the same problem. Ended up using a Dremel tool to split the inner joint from the axle. It worked well I had good control of the depth of the cut to prevent damaging the axle. I made four cuts and the used a chisel to break the pieces off. See the link:

I did replace the joint with one from Moss, identical to the one shown from Minispares.

Good luck,

Ivan

i was looking at those but i am not sure if it contains the bit that sits on the drive shaft or if it is just what you see in the pic so i chose not to chance ruining the ones i had and replace the balls instead try giving mini spares a call to make sure i couldn't find the internal bits separate anywhere

Get a blowtorch on it for several minutes and the heat will expand it off the shaft, then hit it!

Thanks for the replies!

I still can't get it off... I'll try the blowtorch trick before the Dremel!

If its rusted on, the only way to get them off is o split them off as said above. I had a 10 tonne press on some and the still never moved. There should be a narrow Oring at the seat of the joint, and more likely than not some one has had the joint appart in the past, and the Oring was damaged/ removed, and not replaced. Late Model SPi and MPi drive shafts suffer as Rover simplified the machining of the shafts, which still allows water into the joint no matter what
