If its rusted on, the only way to get them off is o split them off as said above. I had a 10 tonne press on some and the still never moved. There should be a narrow Oring at the seat of the joint, and more likely than not some one has had the joint appart in the past, and the Oring was damaged/ removed, and not replaced. Late Model SPi and MPi drive shafts suffer as Rover simplified the machining of the shafts, which still allows water into the joint no matter what

Thanks for that...

It is soaking at the moment... I will attack it fresh in the morning....

What a nightmare...

Okay, so I soaked the open end of the shaft overnight and whacked it this morning. Nothing!

So then I heated up the end on the gas stove blowtorch ring (luckily Mrs. Barman is away at the moment) then whacked it. Nothing!

So then I attacked it with the angle grinder (too impatient for the Dremel) and cut deep grooves on either side. Whacked it again, but still... Nothing!

I then ground down the 'collar' so I could fit a large nut splitter over the end... I heard a very satisfying 'crack' and found that it had split almost from end to end along my groove!

Gave it another whack! Nothing!

So, I used the nut splitter on the other groove... another satisfying 'crack' and a chunk actually fell off!

So I gave it another whack! Nothing!

I then slid the drive shaft down a scaffold pole so that it was supported by the pot joint. Then rested a nut on top of the drive shaft end and tried to whack the shaft through the joint rather than the joint off the shaft.

Eventually, after much whacking both on and off the scaffold pole one side actually started to move off the shaft!

I thought it was all over! But it wasn't... the other half was still stuck solid and took another hour to remove completely...

Now I'm not even sure if the shaft is usable... what do you think guys...?

Thanks!

I'll add it to the 'parts to be refurbished' heap...

Mine was just like that. I used PB Blaster (penetrating oil and rust disolver), flat blade screwdriver and a wire brush to clean the axle to the way it looks in my picture. When removing the pieces of the joint off of the axle, I also had to hit them hard. The rust and the splines had a very good grip of the split pieces of the joint.
