Ello everyone, recently aquired a mini and want to install an I.C E and have a few questions.

Bare in mind im a biker and this is my first car so im a complete audio noob.

I Recently carpeted out the back of my mini (seats werent being used because of the rollcage)

what I want to do is.....

put a sub box going diagonally between the backboard and the base of the "seat" sort of like an enclosed Triangle.

The sides of the box I would like to come out at a 45 degree andgle back down to the base of the seat if you know what I mean. I want to run a 12" sub (or any other suggestions) facing up from the diagonal peice and i want to run 2 upturned 6x9's (or again, any suggestions) on the sides of the box (6x9's would be at a 45 degree angle).

question is, can the 6x9's be mounted in the same box as the sub? or would I have to seperate the 3 compartments? also, what sort of air ports should I put in and where?

This is a rather embarassing question but I would like my Sub to be Red, I know it shouldnt matter but I want it to look how I want aswell as sound, can anyone suggest any good subs that will do the job? what are legacy subs like?

the 6x9's I want to be turned upside down, what sort of sound would this give me? if possible i want these to be red on the underside or chrome.

Also, would It be wise for me to put 2 more 6x9's (or any other size sugessted) on the board that covers the underneif of the seat?

I will try to post pics of a drawn out plan as its hard to describe.

Could you just get an all black sub? That gives you a much better choice...Legacy are pure C**p, and Sony Xplod aren't exactly good

Have you not considering putting some speakers in the front of the car?

With a sub, there's not need for 6x9s. You'd be much better off with some 5" coaxs (if you REALLY want some rearwards midrange)

What's your total budget?

Yeah fit 5 or 6.5" coaxs instead of the 6x9's, don't use sony or legacy subs they are poo.

Also you can't have any other speakers share the same box as the sub as it will blow them up and you can't invert 6x9's as the sound is directional so needs to be pointing towards your ears.

I'd use a single 12 in a box as you described and a pair of 6.5" comps or coaxs mounted up front in some kick builds (so the sound is coming at you from in front not behind). It would also be worth using a 4 channel amp to run it all.

Any idea of a budget?

Id try and keep the "musical" sound away from the rear. You sit in the front of the car, Spend your money in the front of the car! :tongue:

Get yourself a nice 12" Square Kicker sub.

Pioneer 12" square sub

These look nice, they have more surface area than a regular sub and its a good make.

rather than mounting 6x9s in the back too. Why dont you customise this Diagnal box how you want it in the rear seats. And mount maybe the Amp on one side, And a Power cap on the other side.
Then a big fat fuse box above the power cap.

This way it looks cool, and you have access to the necessary bits too.

Then as for speakers, Keep away from 6x9s if you can, They are an odd shape to mount, and they dont sound the best.

go for a nice set of 6" comps or coax's up front.
Try to mount them on a dense surface. A wooden dashboard for example.
Put the tweeters up on the dash rail aiming right at you and your passenger.

This is your best bet for Sound quality.
You will have your bass right behind you, and the high notes firing in from the front of the car.


There is NO WAY you can mount speakers and subs in the same sealed box. Its bad enough having a sub in the boot with speakers in the rear shelf. But in the same sealed enclosure / box, The sub will eat the 6x9s alive!

If I was to seperate the 3 boxed (1 sub 2 speakers) from eachother but still place them next to eachother, would that be suitable? also, I have seen front speaker pods mounted under the dash on either side and this wouldnt be possible for me as I have a rollcage fitted which has a bar that go's straight through it all. even putting tweeters where the air vents will be very awkward, I was thinking about having a centre console in and having tweeters mounted in there. What do you think? Bit boring that all the good subs are black isnt it?

Binge...you mentioned Kicker square subs and sound quality in the same post without the use of negatives...something isn't right there

The Solo's are famed for getting quite loud (have held a few SPL records) but sounding like a fart in a dustbin

Rusty: 3 boxes would be fine Tweeters in the dash would sound funny though...you'd have no stereo image, so you would miss chunks of the music out

I cant put em in the dash anyway hehe, how about 2 next to eachother in a centre console? thats really all I can think of =(

You cant just throw a pair of tweeters in the front. You need to mount the Mid-range (the component speaker) up front too. And they need to be directional. So just sticking them somewhere is not going to get you the best performance out of them.

Its ok putting 6x9s in the back, but that is a typical chav setup. Its the quick easy "Look at my speakers" way out.

Go for quality, not looks. You can tart them up later.


as for placeing them, if you have a roll cage, then the tweeters can be mounted in small pods (The VIBE Comp kits come with tweeter pods) and will clip / stick to the front rollcage bar (The one that goes over by the sun-visors).

as for the comps, they will be ok in a center console, but they will be close together meaning sterio sound will not be present. you will have a mono sounding System.

Im pretty sure you can get a pair of 6" comps in the dash with the roll cage. They arent that close are they?

Its all about imagination, But if your after a good sounding setup, you need to keep the speakers up front mate.

You could mould a full set up and seperate chambers for each speaker..

Could well be an awesome mounting location...a half way house between kickbuilds and dash pods

was waitin for someone to say that only had the car a wee bit and not even driving it yet so I have an excuse for that ******* head unit.

im good with carpet and MDF but havnt got a scooby's when it comes to fibreglassing, anyone got anything in mind to give it a neat and tidy finish?

I'm scratching my head as I type this with my spare hand, thinking of an ingenius way to fibreglass that :nugget:

Wood would work...but you want to keep as much of the triangle open as possible so you can fit the 5.25" speakers in (4" means you are really limited on choices) Plus it would take lots of angled bits...

Should not be hard to makes pods for that.
1 days work for the pair...

Same principle as making the larger set up.
