On a similar theme we fitted one of the ebay ones to my bro in laws 1970 Auto, I followed him the other day and I noticed that under gentle braking the main brake lights came on dim and the 3rd light not at all. Brand new switch I hasten to add
The 1970 had the pressure brake switch so we've fitted a relay in the circuit so the pressure switch activates the relay which sends full voltage to the brakes lights.

Works a treat. Nice and bright under all braking now

interesting, when peeps have seen my 93' sprite with a 3rd brake light on, they say drivers side brake light doesnt come on if it is its very dim!
This only happens when lights are on at night wonder if i need something to make it brighter?
The 3rd brake light is attached to drivers side light to.

I got mine from a scrap yard. It was not from a Mini but I looked for a car with the same slope to the back window. I wired it into the brake lights. It works just fine.

If you are still concerned about being seen from behind you should look at brighter lights (LED's) and/or brake flashers. The brake flasher is a small/simple circuit that is wired in between your brake switch and the brake lights. On pressing the brake pedal it gives a number of very quick flashes of the brake lights and then the brake light stays on until you release the pedal. Here is an example of such a circuit: http://www.sentex.ca...c/motflash.html You can adjust the speed of the flashing and the number of flashes. IMHO with brighter lights and the flasher you are more noticeable than with a standard set up and a third brake light. Of course, of of them together would be even better.

NOTE: check your local regulations. Brake light flashers are legal in my Canadian province so long as there are no more than 8 flashes. You need to check that they are legal where you are.
