All forms of engineering require maths (at least all that I can think of at the minute). You also need to have done the separate statistics paper at gcse and at A level it is highly advisable to do further maths if you wish to do an engineering course at uni.

In 1985 I did particularly badly in A Levels,
Having got an O level pass in Maths, an E in Physics and a D in Design ( Because I was mostly drunk, hungover, or sober and chasing girls)

I managed to get on a HND in Manufacturing Engineering, which had only STATISTICS as the maths element. I managed to get 96 % in the 1st year exam for that, and over 80% over all the subjects, which allowed them to move me to the start of the Second year of the BEng(Hons). Thus avoiding the maths they did in the first year which by all accounts was more mechanics biased.

The statistics is really useful to me and I've really spent the last ten years focusing on quality improvements using what I learnt on the first year of the HND (Only now they call it 6 Sigma and package it in Bull Crap) I Must use Minitab on a daily basis for maybe 4 hours.

That is a fair starting point. YOU need maths, and You know what you have to do and if that means working twice as hard as anyone else then 'they' have to let you try otherwise whats the point?

Quick question: What exam board is the maths you want to do?

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend! Well good on you, I did the wrong subjects and didn't even know universities did courses specifically on motor sport engineering! - At least you know what you need, and where you want to go.

Regarding the retakes, it is often the case that your first attempt is best, but not always. I resat 2 a-level exams from January this summer, which increased the pressure, but I worked really hard for them around the other exams, and crazy amounts of revision for the summer ones, and I upped one by two grades, and one by one grade... I don't think it affected my summer grades though either which was fab, but it was stressful! :)

Its similar for you though probably, if you'll be working hard at A-level maths, cause I found my techniques and general knowledge in the two subjects increased/broadened between January, and the summer resits, which helps alot... Worth a go i'd say, work hard at the AS maths, and you should naturally improve your resit, and do even better if you can manage your time around your AS revision and go over all of your GCSE module topics again :)
