hello. i planning in doing a swift conversion, but i need to pick a few heads

i have got hold of swift gti engine from a 1988 f reg car, but no gearbox

it maybe some stupid questions,as A series engine i know very well but i am not clued up on swift engine

1. can i use any gearbox from any swift of that year on this engine or is it just a swift gti gearbox can only be used on a gti engine

2. is there any other suzuki engine in other models of that year which used the same gearbox at the gti, it may make the search easier

3. how strong are these gearboxes, can they really take some stick

4. is there anything i should look out for

5 and can anyone give me the type ( code) of engine and gearbox it is, eg like the honda convertion they mainly b16 or b18 engines,

thanks for all your help

cheers dean

For '88 gti engine you can fit any mk1 ('86-'88) swift 'box. Best option would be a gti box with a FD from 8v (GL/GLS whatever) which would give you FD of 3.52 which is necessary if you run 10" tires. Not bad for 13" either. Unless you want really quick acceleration and unusable first gear.

mk1 gti gearbox has stronger diff than mk2 or newer. Don't know how much 8v gearbox can take abuse but I'd rather use a gti 'box.

Best thing for you to do would be to check these two forums and gather more information from there:
