hello, ive been driving my mini now for almost 6 months and it is completely stripped out inside and i am now bored of having no sound system. i have a headunit wirired up with 2 alpine 6x9s under the rear bench. it sounds alright but i need more of a kick, mostly for when im hanging around in car parks lol  as the cars way to loud inside.
ive been wanting to get a sub for a while and will be getting one very soon, it comes in a non sealed box.

i was just wondering if anyone will know what itll sound like with no sound proofing in the car,
i was thinking of just buying some dynamat stuff and putting it on the floor and bench then cover with red carpet (as my car is red so itll still look stripped >_< )
will this be a good idea or?

the sub is an mtx tube enclosure either 8" or 12" im thinking 12 =D . OH and i want to put the sub on the rear bench.
what do you guys think? the music i listen to is drum and bass, dubstep, reggae. stuff that includes bass lol.

thanks
jaffer.

mines partly stripped, if you sound deaden the whole boot, and have the sub in there, and make sure you have enough space in the parcel shelf to allow air movement it should be sweet

i had to cut a hold out of the middle of mine to allow air movement, but kept the piece i cut out incase i ever want it back in.

the hole is about the size of a dvd case for a 12" sub, but id reccomend a 10" sub

i had a twin set of 12" jbl subs on my rear bench (which i got from carlzilla ) sounded awesome but when i fitted my harnesses i didnt have space for them so they had to come out grrr

i've had all sorts of subs in the boot and to be honest i couldnt get the sound i wanted so just gave up with that idea

I just have a simple sealed off the shelf 12" sub box and cant even remember name of it or the amp lol mate gave it to me with mini.

Fixed all this down to a boot board and for added base works a treat! as got a decent pioneer head unit for control all though old was £500 in its day.

Hardest thing is keeping it all down quiet at mo have a piece of wood wedged between boot board and underside of parcel shelf but it still moves when going over bumps. Dont really want it fixed to well down as need access to spare and battery!

its fine in the boot with sufficiant air flow

i had to sound proof the boot because the boot floor rattled about an inch at volume :|

only a jbl gt5-12 1100w peak, 275w rms off a 250w alpine amp

could do with a bigger amp to be honest, funds dont allow one atm :(

mini's with the interior stripped sound like a tin-can and the sound waves will be bouncing around inside, the interior will help to get the bass alittle bit deeper,
stuff like the headliner and carpet

sound mat is a good thing, but if you don't have a big enuff system to make the car rattle, don't worry about it

im mounting two jbl 12's on the parcel shelf with the box build into the boot, not the boot as the box
and got me a 700wrms jbl amp,

gonna run a all jbl system, amps/subs/door speakers

my last system i had in a truck had 4 layers of sound mat and i still couldn't keep it from rattling, but that just tells you how big the system was,
with no mat in the truck, i broke the back window because the metal from the back wall moved to much, it would hit the bed
so yes, sound mat does help a ton

if you proply sound deaden your car and give good airflow and put your sub in a very good box (air flow etc) it will sound brilliant even fli subs in good boxs get more then 100db alone!

So Your saying you run a 3KW sub and it dosnt rattle a single skinned tin can mini? And you accuse 'Joakwin' of dreaming?

That would be because your using the wrong stuff to try and get a result thats not possible.

To stop rattles, you need to add weight to the panel to stop reverberation, i.e so it takes more energy to move it.

This is why useing a thick bitumin backed foil topped material is used for this purpous, as it adds alot of ridgitiy to single skinned panels. i agree with you here that things like Dynamat are not really neccaserry, there are plenty of companies selling an almost identical product for half the money, although when we get Bmw's and the like in with big budgets, i would always use dynamat for some reason, but when the sound proofing is going to cost more than the car, like it would on a mini, theres not alot of point.

All i can assume is that your actually refering to roofing flashing? Which is a very similar product to the dynamat style sound deadning, loft insulation is generally a fiberglass matting, a few inches thick, and pretty useless for deadning panel resonance.

Unless you apply it to the whole vehcile, its quite a skill to target where the resonance is coming from, unless its not massivly noticable, a disticnt rattle is pretty easy to locate, but a hum in the cab is alot harder!

well when it comes down to the system install part of my build
and it doesn't work out like i have in mind, then i'll change my plan and come up with something else,
i can always port thur that panel and mount the subs right under it, one huge slot port thur the metal to let the air thur, but
the install will be smooth tho

almost any sub on the market now a days can handle 3k watts, but the question is, how long can it handle a true 3kwrms? not peak watts but a true rms?
it comes down to sub building to make it handle 3k rms daily, the magnet and the size of it, the coil size, what the coil is made out of, the spiders and how many, the cone, the basket
and do you even know what kind of electric system you need to have in place to support a true 3kw rms amp?
no mini alt/battery will even come close, yet alone the battery cables

ps, some of u don't think sound mat doesn't work, the system i had was with 5kwrms, 5 red top optima's, 500amps of alt power, 6 runs of 2/00 wire,
2 custom build 18's in a 15cu ft^3 ported box in a ext-cab pick up, the system got alittle out of hand, so this time around,
im going for a small clean set up

like i said my mini is stripped so there is nothing to rattle apart from the windows n crazy roof flex, inside is serious loud, outside you can hardly hear a thing!!!

i would love to show you and prove it :)

but yes sorry i agree with what your saying but MY OPINION is not to sound proof it and waste your money and what u was explaining about the foil stuff is correct i cant remember the name of the stuff tho,

This is a more of a people opinion really theres no right or wrong answer.

and also im running a orion hcca 10.2 woffer go check the stats online! 1500wattsrms 4000 max. SPL gear

in a custom box tuned at 44hz

1500wattsrms 1ohm off a vibe amp

still running it in only been in a week going to be putting 1kwrms on each voice coil when the funds allowe

got focals k2 power components running at only 50watts untill amp is installed

and a pair of orion 6x9s soon to be in the bin :)
