Yes tried richening it again.....but still lacks any power, gets to 30/35mph,put your foot down then it backfires badly through the carb, but idles and starts ok,will try this HIF38 just to eliminate the carb.

And i have the correct needle fitted,for a 1293.

Also noticed when looking closer at the cable linkages they seem tobe very loose and the springs fitted incorrectly,so stripped and put them back together the correct way, will take it for a test run later.

i think you should try with the hif38 then you can rule out your other carb as being the problem or not, ideally you want to get yourself a hif44 then i think your best bet would be to take her to the rollers and get it set-up by a pro :)

After reading and searching on the forum here it seems a common problem, and the best solution is a process of elimination.

1. Check timing......this was set up at the start with a light.

2.Re check valve clearences...again done at rebuild but will check again

3.Check ingintion points leads etc etc....all new at rebuild

4. Check for any leaks around the carb/maifold and airfilter.

I have noticed a lot of air noise around the cone filter, are they meant to sound like that?

As i mentioned before its fine when ticking over, and you can rev it allday and it never pops back through the filter only when under load and driving?

Well i have finally sorted it.!!!!

I basically re checked everything again.

1. Adjusted valve clearences.
2. Checked and double checked timing.
3. Renewed points and condenser.
4. Rechecked carb/needle changed oil in dashpot for something thicker.

And it runs perfect,i cant believe it,its such fun to drive now cant wait to give it a blast this weekend, obviously one of the above has cured it.

Thankyou all for your suggestions.

I have a HIF38 carb that i was going to replace good or bad idea?.

I think you will find it was the dashpot that was the problem! what did you have in there WD40? it should be just plain old 20/50 for general road use. It could have been the points, but as you did it all at the same time, you will never know :) You should diagnose one item at a time so that you learn the symptoms and their respective cures, it will help you in the future.

And i have the correct needle fitted,for a 1293.

There is no one "correct needle for a 1293", it'll depend on the cam, head, manifolds, exhaust, carb etc.

Iam thinking it was the dashpot oil it was as thin as WD40 as you said,i put 20/50 in its place and bingo .!!!

Glad you sorted it. The thicker the dashpot oil, the richer the engine runs when you put your foot down - it acts like an accelerator pump found on other carbs. You don't say what carb is on there now but I guess it's an H4, a hif38 is the same size so won't be a huge improvement. Hif44's are more plentiful & likely to add a bit of top end power to a half decent 1293.

I really wouldn't look to a rolling road to sort out a poorly running Mini. They are expensive places to use for problem finding and they won't be able to set up your car if it has faulty bits on it.
