Hi,

Trying not to sound daft but im not sure what oil to put in my Mini, Haynes manual says 10/40 but i have noticed alot of people mentioning 20/50. Does it make any difference????

Any help appreciated,

On a freshly rebuild engine, i would suggest 10w40, however. Given you've probably got an engine with a fair few miles on it, clearances would have opened up a little ect ect. Go for 20/50

Yes as 10/40 Clasic Corma is for 1959 to 1985 then 20/50 is for 1985 to 2000 as the latter G/box requires a thicker oil.......... :D

All gearboxes from 1959 to 2000 are of the same basic design and all require a mineral 20w50 oil.
The best oils are Valvoline Racing 20w50, Castrol Classic 20w50, Millers, Penrite or Halfords, all at 20w50.
You an use a 20w50 on new and older engines.

Annoyingly, you're not going to get a single answer on oil here.

I use the oil that my local shop has. I use mineral oil, 20/50. Others use thinner, I believe Mr GuessWorks uses thin 10/40.

Logically, the Mini gearbox is based on an A35/Morris Minor original gearbox, but turned sideways and modified. The A35, etc, was deemed to need EP80 gear oil, so all Mini oil is a compromise. That's why a good quality 20w50 is usually regarded as the best for the combined engine/box in the Mini.
I would never use anything else in either my rally or road Minis. In fact, in my rally Minis I will ever only use Valvoline Racing 20w50 because it is as good as any oil you will find in a mineral 20w50.
