
Hs4 Versus Hif38

I am currently driving a 1985 998 with standard HS4 Carb and have a chance to pick up a Hif 38 at a really good price and I am wondering how much improvement if any I'll see with the Hif 38 over the HS4. I have no problems with the HS4 but since it seems to be a good deal I am wondering if I should bother and are there any modifications I would need to do to fit it. I have a Stage 1 kit installed but other than that no other mods.

No power difference at all. But of course it may be a much newer carb..........

What IS worth doing - is getting an inlet manifold that is NOT part of the exhaust manifold. So look for an MG Metro alloy inlet (or one of the many copies) and if it happens to come with an HIF carb so much the better!

Good point BMC,... there's one on ebay at the moment still attached to the metro manifold. Which is good as it means it'll have the spacer and abutment plate too.
Don't forget you'll need a special throttle cable to run the HIF carbs. Minispares list as the 1990> 1275 carb cable. It's basically a metro one end, and mini the other.
And make sure your engine steadies are in new condition... you'll be hitting the bulkhead if not. pesky things.

I'm sure I have read in Vizzard that the HiF carbs flow a higher CFM than the equivalent sized HS carb.

as far as i'm aware hif's flow better, and are a damned site easier to tune!!!

they do,.. due to the much finer machining on the throat and surrounding internal parts, also due to the improved elbow joint that flows better.
