Compared to the cabriolet I reckon Earl's straight cut box n drops will be positively refined in comparison

Don't forget to tighten his rack!!

everyone always says straightcuts are such a pain...you guys must be wimps, i used my dogbox daily for a while and that was fine and im not deaf!

my thought exactly! i have straight cut drops, which are louder than a straight cut gearbox, the minis my daily hack, their not too loud inside the car.

the pros of straight cuts are, less power loss through the transmission, no sideloading, less friction. cons, they are weaker than helical gears. noise could be a good or bad thing, for me, i love the whine.

Another thing to bear in mind, when your in top (4th) there isn't any whining coming from the gearbox. Only the drops/final drive if SC.

even then the noise isnt too loud, 65mph is 4k for me, i normally cruise at just over 70mph.

considering the gearkits were originaly made 50 years ago, i guess advances in materials will have come about, im betting the content of the steel on a brand spankin new swifty box wouldnt be the same as the 1st helical box that rolled off the line, you have to remember steel isnt just steel

Yeah it's all made in china now and full of crap.

which is why the racing mg midgets at work keep breaking straight cut boxes, just crap materials.

SC boxes arent much louder than helical at all, its the drop gears that are louder.
We have run 3.4 FDs with SC kits with a midly tuned 1340 very successfully
