Hammerite do make a BBQ paint that will work, because... wait for it... it's High Temperature paint.
Normal paint will most likely burn, as with any painting make sure the surface is clean, really clean, and it will look great. A quick bodge and it will flake off and look rubbish.

I have to say that I have Tetrosyl and am dissapointed. The solvent for it is petrol!! and petrol removes it when when dry too. Unless this was a cheap Tetrosyl(good old ebay) but claimed to be enamel,petrol/oil resistantHalfords paint is poor on the engine, flakes off after a short while

I painted up the engine in the 25 getting on for 5 years ago now with hammerite and strangely enough it’s still stuck to the engine block. If the engine block is getting that hot externally that the paint is flaking off, then the paint is the least of your worries. Besides a small 250ml tin will do about 3 engines if used carefully.edit: if you use hammertie on the block i am pretty sure it will burn off. you can use it on the other bits though.

i've used normal car spray paint before, and as long as it's cleaned properly, and you don't overheat too much

it's all about the degreasing.

Il second that, i doubt my engine was cleaned from the day it was made, went through 3 cans of degreaser and a jetwashing to remove and last bits of grease or soapyness
then painted

why would you try paint a dirty surface anyway?
Not dirty but I would imagine most would clean as best as they can with the whole engine out, not everyone takes it apart and gets the full monty done piece by piece, even a few mini based magazines I've seen show a basic clean then apply......
