Hi All

I currently have a 94 M 1275 minski and was wondering if anybody knew what the law was on me buying a cheapo (pre cat age) body and then swapping the engines over? Would it need to be re registered with the DVLA and would it still need to have a cat?

Any ideas?

You would be able to do that and you would not need a cat.
Basically if you have all the papers for the older mini it is just a case of registering the new engine number with DVLA.

The law regarding CAT's etc apply to newer cars, you are simply replacing an engine.

thx

ooh that's great news. sounds tempting to do that as I don't think my cat does much any more (too many push starts) except reduce my power. It might even solve my rust problems

If your desperate to ditch the cat, just use an older block. You can fit carb'd motors to Injection cars. This way you can have all the injectoin gear and run it without cat.

If you change the engine to an earlier (pre cat) engine and can prove it to the MOT tester then you are ok to remove the cat legally.
As for DVLA and registerring the new engine, dunno - never bothered telling them before, just tell them it was in there when you bought it if you ever get stopped by the law and they decide to give the car a good going over (haha like that will ever happen, a copper gettting dirty hands!)

Some coppers can be arses, my cousin used to be pulled over weekly as he had the only other black escort RS in the village (the copper had the other one)

What year did cat's become a legal requirement? 1992?

with regard to the DVLA, all you have to do is put the new engine number on the V5 (and new cc if you are upping it) then send it to them and they'll send it back with the amendments :cheese:

I repeat... Catalytic converters are not a legal requirement... and never have been.

The requirement is for the car to pass an emissions test, with or without a cat.

I believe it is manadatory that a car is supplied new with a catalytic converter, and I'm not even sure that's true, and I think that came into effect in 1994.
