Would I be right in thinking that the castle nut on the outside of the hub doesn't need removing if I simply remove the drive shaft & CV joint as one?

Do not remove this nut, there is never a need to remove it for an engine swap, and it will just lead to tears :(

wrong end of the drive shaft....

Ha ha!

On a more serious note, once I release the bottom joint will the CV/drive shaft pop out the hub easily or does that castle nut need removing?

I assume once the CV joint is out of the hub, with a little work the driveshaft can be removed from the gearbox?

Thanks again!

You will still need to release the inner joint from the gearbox so that you can pull out the complete shaft assy, NOTE. it will not come all the way out of your subframe, that is normal. and whilst it is in this state your Mini will not be able to move..... :(

Pop the top ball joints. The top arms are pushed on the rebound stops by the suspension; the bottom arms will drop further & away from the direction you're lifting the engine. Once the pot joints are free you can put the ball joints back in to move the car.

Took the nut off the bottom ball joint, then took the nut off the top ball joint. Tried persuading both with a hammer and no joy, so it looks like it will take something else.

I may have to get one of those fork shaped splitters - unless someone else knows of a canny trick!

before yo go any further, now you've hit the top of the joint with a hammer, just make sure you can put the nut back on...

Proper tools make the job easy...

hmmm....that's exactly what I thought I'd need. Will have to get to the shops (or eBay!) before I can continue.
