once youve tried all the others and failed you'll end up doin what i said download hddclone (its freeware.. or shareware) burn a cd with the hddclone on it plug both drive into what ever pc your using.. set one as target and one as... erm... not target (what ever the opposite of target is) and just let the software do its magic.. simple as that... no faffing around and its a bit for bit copy including all boot sectors... it'll be like you never changed drives..ive done this a billion times... i use a second pc, and boot off a cd/usb/floppy with hddclone and then just copy the ide to the sata.. boot sectors and all... stick the new drive in the pc that had the ide drive and it worked flawlessly... why are you having so many problems doing this?

if i install from within windows it works, only then my sata becomes an e:/ drive.
Really dont want to have to go through the process of having to reinstall all my programs, and getting everything back to how it is now

Do as danrock101 suggested, connect both drives, install Windows on your new HD and then copy across the stuff you want to keep.

My copy of acronis true image gets so far, reboots to the cloning process and fails saying a script file is missing. And my win7 disc wont boot from cd so i cant install the sata drivers to that disc before i do clone the drives.
Fed up. Everything i try ends up with error messages

Do as Ethel says, set your IDE has primary but with your SATA connected. Boot in to Windows, it'll go online and fetch the SATA drivers for your new HD, once you can read your new HD, reboot and use whatever imaging tool you like to copy it across.
Alternatively, you can download something called dd for Windows, which will allow you to clone your IDE HD to your SATA HD block by block while your HD is still live.
I'm WARNING you though, read all the instructions VERY carfully, if you type the wrong command in to dd your OS, data, everything is going poof very, very quickly.

The install using the disc from within win7 works, but then i end up with two copies of win7 at boot, and i get confused as to which is which when booting up each time.
Ive been trying for about a week, i get the feeling somebody else would have it done within an hour.
