ive done this a billion times... i use a second pc, and boot off a cd/usb/floppy with hddclone and then just copy the ide to the sata.. boot sectors and all... stick the new drive in the pc that had the ide drive and it worked flawlessly... why are you having so many problems doing this?

once youve tried all the others and failed you'll end up doin what i said download hddclone (its freeware.. or shareware) burn a cd with the hddclone on it plug both drive into what ever pc your using.. set one as target and one as... erm... not target (what ever the opposite of target is) and just let the software do its magic.. simple as that... no faffing around and its a bit for bit copy including all boot sectors... it'll be like you never changed drives..

Yeah, just do it the fast way, install windows 7 on your new sata fresh, then leave you ide plugged in and copy all the data over from that. When we used to clone hard drives using differnt types of hard drives they would always give us problems, norton ghost in hirens is the tool to use.

When sorted use Partition Drive on Format so you have a safer drive.Norton Backup is very good to help keep you safe in the future, you can use restore points.I also use External Drives, that keeps all your Data safe, also from the internet Criminals that Hack us all given a chance. :- Many problems come from Free-W./Share W.
Check out Karens Tools on Web,her software is FREE and SAFE to use, some very good programs, she is in America.Post back if you find some good stuff.

i cant even do a fresh install from 7 and make my sata the c:/ drive, because my win7 disc keeps locking up during install when i boot from it, shortly after language selection, tried unplugged pretty much everything and still no luck.

if i install from within windows it works, only then my sata becomes an e:/ drive.

Really dont want to have to go through the process of having to reinstall all my programs, and getting everything back to how it is now :-

Unless your two drives are exactly the same size you're only going to cause yourself more headaches as the partitions will also be copied to the new drive and then you have to start messing about with resizing partitions. It's not difficult if you know what you're doing, but If you don't, you literally are a click away from losing all your data.

Do as danrock101 suggested, connect both drives, install Windows on your new HD and then copy across the stuff you want to keep.

i can clone the ide to sata exactly as the ide is, i just need it to be bootable.

My copy of acronis true image gets so far, reboots to the cloning process and fails saying a script file is missing. And my win7 disc wont boot from cd so i cant install the sata drivers to that disc before i do clone the drives.

Fed up. Everything i try ends up with error messages :)

Hmmm, right.

Do as Ethel says, set your IDE has primary but with your SATA connected. Boot in to Windows, it'll go online and fetch the SATA drivers for your new HD, once you can read your new HD, reboot and use whatever imaging tool you like to copy it across.

Alternatively, you can download something called dd for Windows, which will allow you to clone your IDE HD to your SATA HD block by block while your HD is still live.

I'm WARNING you though, read all the instructions VERY carfully, if you type the wrong command in to dd your OS, data, everything is going poof very, very quickly.

The problem with booting to windows installation disc is it freezes up completely after the language selection. Ive tried all the suggestions on tinternet, removing usb devices (all removed except wireless k.board and mouse, even tryed old usb k.board on its own, removing all unused drives, cant remove my 2nd stick of memory as ive only got 2gb and the 1gb of ram isnt enough to boot into im guessing when i remove the one stick.

The install using the disc from within win7 works, but then i end up with two copies of win7 at boot, and i get confused as to which is which when booting up each time.

Ive been trying for about a week, i get the feeling somebody else would have it done within an hour.
