Going to start building a turnover jig for our Mini restoration project and I was planning to use a scaffold tube as the horizontal tube that goes through the car. I am now unsure whether it will be stiff enough. What do you guys think ?

Thanks
Ian

Scaffold was fine for my jig. I use two lengths that can be separated for storage. For the joint I have used a piece of bar with an OD that fits the ID of the tube.
It bends slightly, but im pretty sure with wont fail.

A scaffold tube should easily be strong enough to hold the weight of a Mini shell, I think 90% of homemade spits I've seen use them for back bones.

I butt welded two shorter poles together to make the correct length. The pole takes the weight of the shell, two subframes and me inside the car (and I'm no light weight). :-

i don't like the look of the minimikebc one, a frame looks more stable. that's what i've got. it's mine in the pics you posted.

can get dimensions of the a frame if anyone wants them?

wont measure the bars that mount to the body, they are easy to work out, will just give you the heights to the bottom of the tube on them that slides over the main tube. it needs to be about 10mm higher to clear the clubman slam panel.

how about two seperate A frames then like the front one, have a pate made up that bolts through the front hole in the bulkhead. then the rear one same again but bolted into the seat bench? then if u need to u could brace the boot lid opening bit and it would keep the shell sraight, then you wouldnt need to run a scaffold pole down the centre of the car.

Just though I'd add we use one of these at work instead of the pole straight through the body method. We prefer it as it caters for pick ups, estates and vans as well as regular saloons although the feet aren't great.

My Estate sat on it quite nicely but I had to make the lower mount for the back myself.

All looks good, I do like the look of the suspension mounted ones better. They look abit more secure if anything.
