Ironically after i offered advice this morning i think mine has just done the same.Thankfully i am fitting a new engine and gearbox on monday.I think its the end that goes in the pot joint,if it was a broken diff would it not lose all drive.

Gearbox Failure? :( Broke Down...

Sorry to hear that mate, but at least you have a new engine to go in
I'm confused now, like I say the play isn't betwean the wheel, driveshaft or outer pot joint on each side. Surely this can only leave a worn diff?
Advice anyone?

It does, the diff is 4 small bevel gears, that can be relatively fine with no load on them but can produce a lot of leverage on each other to force themselves apart, There's also the centrifugal forces when it's spinning at speed.
You'd have to disconnect the driveshafts to remove it anyway so there's scope for further investigation along the way.

As ethel says above, buut it looks like its pointing to your Diff which is a cheaper/easyer fix than having to do a gearbox atleast?

Right, looks like tomorrow I'm pulling the engine out and investigating.
Bet I won't be able to find a local bearing supplier open on a saturday though, for the two bearings which the diff rotate on in the casing. Hmm.
Thanks all, JJ
