It's the 'serves you right for not getting a proper console' light
It should go away when you start to cry :-

had this about two weeks ago, if you are handy with a soldering gun is a fairly simple fix, i found out after spending 30 quid to get tit fixed. Basically the main board gets warped under heat, and the solder gets undone on a couple of heatsinks. Waht you have to do is open up carefully the xbox, find the solder that has come undone and solder it again.

You should look towards the part where the mains connector attaches at the back of the console. Thats where the heat sinks ought to be. Hope this helps.

The motherboard is inside the metal cage surrounded by the plastic shell. You have to remove the entire plastic shell to get at it really. If this console was under 3 years old you should have just sent it away for free.

just to let you know my mate fixes these and ps3. the rrod on the xbox is caused by the paste under the heatsink failing. special paste can be bought from maplins but you also have to change the fixings that hold heatsink down. i have seen him fix one so know it can be done.
the ps3 orange light means the board has overheated and caused a '' dry joint '' on one of the many chips. that job is a lot more complicated but vidoe of fix is on youtube. hope this helps.

Warm it with a hair dryer.

my girlfriends brother did this with his ps3, put it in a cardboard box, and put a hiar dryer in there to heat it up to melt the solder again, worked a treat, lasted all of 2 weeks when the remains of the solder that managed to sort it finally melted to much and now it needs resoldering properly!

When my old one started playing up (DVD drive didn't like to work), I had to open and repair it every 2 weeks or so. To get the case off, you have to undo the clips under the faceplate, and the clips at the back. The ones at the back are reall [censored] to do. You basically need to stick a little screwdriver (I use optical ones) or something similar into the little slots, until each one clicks. Then the case should pull off.

Then, to get the other side of the case off, undo the six Torx screws shown in this picture:

If you need it, there's a guide with pictures here: http://www.llamma.co...Disassembly.htm

EDIT - you don't need the tool it advertises on that link, it's easier to use screwdrivers etc.
