Hi all, my name's craig, i'm new to this forum and it seems to be the right place for advice which is exactly what i could do with.
My head gaskett recently went, leading i think to a lack of compression between the two centre cylinders so i gave it to the local garage who put a new gaskett in, no problems for nearly 1600 miles until it went again, so was replaced again but went after only 150 miles this time.
The car has never ran hot and hovers around the centre mark on the temp gague quite happily.
Both times the gaskett was replaced neither the head or block were skimmed.
What are the chances if i get the head skimmed, all should be well from there on.
My concern is that the car has done around 2000 miles since the first gaskett went and wonder if this may have done any other internal damage.
I run a 1991, 1275 carb cooper with a 1996 spi cooper engine as replacement using my carb etc.
Please help

Hi
Welcome on board..
Get the head skimmed and blocked checked... sounds like the garage did a shortcut..
From what you say the car is running not too bad, so I would reckon that there is nothing major to worry about with regards to engine damage.
But you never know..
Skimmed head and a new gasket sounds like it will do the trick from what you say, but only one way to find out..
Good luck

I would check the condition of the metal between cyls 2 and 3, if it keeps blowing there there may be a burn though on the block...
Also use a good head gasket like the BK450

Thank you all for your replies and input.
Just to update you...
I've taken the head off and had it skimmed at a reputable engineers.
They tell me from inspection there was slight damage between the two centre cylinders which has now been rectified. (lovely and shiny too)
I've cleaned up pretty much everything else, block, bolt threads, anything with a gaskett and removed some black stuff, (carbon?) ready to put it all back together tomorrow.
Using my shiny new gaskett set i'm not sure wether or not i should use some gaskett seal aswell (that blue stuff i forget the name for ) or wether it won't make a worthwhile difference.
I've put a couple of pics in to.
Cheers

Just to confirm...
absolutely no blue sealant stuff between the block and head
use the correct gaskett only
and save the blue stuff for the thermostat
Shud i be forgetting about the blue stuff for the exhaust manifold aswell?
Cheers
What's the name for that blue stuff?
Anyone!
