Having had both I would say carb is just as reliable. My spi wasn't very nice to work on, all the plugs for it are a stupid design and the whole thing takes up too much space in the engine bay. To add insult to injury all the injection minis had brake servos and makes it very awkward to do anything on that side of the engine bay. I had the problems with the split vacuum pipes and elbows on the back of the inlet (horrible to get to) and the exhaust would work it's way loose every week or so and mess up the injection system. I now have a carb'd mini and it runs like a dream, is better on fuel and much easier to work on, and I don't need a garage to plug a laptop in it for millions of pounds to find a fault!

Carbs are the best idea for your first car, as if anything does go wrong it will be reasonably easy/cheap to sort out. Nice to see a fellow medway mini owner posting! :D
