one thing that we always here after a big rant thread is why can't TMF be a more adult place

i have often thought about it but not sure if it would be good or bad for the forum

the forum i use the most is VZI (vw forum) and it's very much a adult forum, you can even post up pictures of your naked other half ;)

a lot of the words used start with a F or a C and you can prity much say want you want with just a few simple rules, no nips in chat, nothing illegal and Brian's place his rules

if i started a thread similar to BINI bashing (air cooled v water cooled) no one would care

i would either look a idiot and no one would join in

look a bit sad but a few join in

get called a ;) or troll

or there would be a big slanging match clear the air and the forum would go back to normal in a few hours

there would be no moderation and no warnings

all good so far, like i said above you could use building site type of language and there is no swear filter

i think the only thing i could do to get banned is up set Brian

on the other hand i have a wife and 2 young kids

i find the same F and C type words are used at meets and shows where as TMF meets seem to stay swear free (or until after kids bed time after a few drinks )

hopefully if i can warp there minds enough my kids will like minis and i would have no problem them using TMF, VZI as a youngster i'm not so sure

as a teen i was always told not to swear in front of woman and kids and despite working on a building site i don't bring these words at home and feel a bit strange using them in front of people i don't know

one thing we often here on TMF is stop treating us as kids, but with the rules we have in place we very much are like being at school and if you treat people as kids they act like them

i'm just rambling on now but it would be good to hear your thoughts

this is not i want change topic because i don't know that i do, but is something i haven't seen discussed before on tmf

so keep it clean and don't blame the TMF staff but lets have your thoughts good and bad

I agree, when someone posts something completly stupid and rediculous. You have to politely tell them what you think. Which is often nto what I think, but I love this forum and don't want to break the rules.

If people could tell them what they thought, they may realise their mistake and learn from it, it may also loose the reputation TMF has, of being a bit silly.

Turbominis is run very well.

exactly what i was thinking.

Seriously though, It is a bit of a nanny state here, they are only words. If a kids never seen it before they will probably dismiss it, or ask their parents what it means. Its not difficult to find bad words and websites on the internet, so why bother trying to keep a site meant for adults 'clean'?

I dont think there is anyone on here younger than 14. Ive known most of the F's and C's since i was about 10.
Ive even heard primary school kids swearing in front of their parents without them batting an eyelid.

How about an adult section??

Seen them before and they work really well. It would only be for general or silly chat though as 'mini chat' could do with staying open for everyone to see, otherwise non adult posts would dwindle.

i think TMF works really well
its one of the best forums around

the swear filter can be irratating at times, but i think minis appeal to such a wide age range (i loved them from 8) that it does work too. then again, its not like they havent heard it before

There needs to be a bit more freedom of what we can say, and also a little more listening to everyones ideas and opinions (seems some are a little biased and dont even take into consideration suggestions)

i know its been suggested before but why not maybe have a adult section of the forum?

I do agree on some of your views. The rules in place make this forum a nicer place with its lack of swearing but it can be quite childish in the form of MINI (It doesnt have BMW in the name for god sake its called a MINI not a bloody BINI!) bashing.
I also think the Nanny state thing is very true. The mods can be very strict and the no spam even in the off topic section is a bit ridiculous. That seems like the whole point of the section to me!

yeah i have found that a large majority of people on here are the younger folk such as myself. I think some of the younger members are a bit much to handle in maturity and on the for sale section they want to pay you in nuts and bolts or chocolate kisses! I think a mature forum would be a very good idea. Would you base the forum on age and if so what age would it start at? Maybe there could be a maturity test to take before you sign up! Not sure how that would work exactly but something along those lines. Regards Blue

I have a fiftteen year old lad who spends quite a lot of time on here (he's had a mini since 14) reading build threads and guides on how to repair minis and i've always encouraged him because i know that there are set rules and it's not to adult and is suitable and to be honest he does'nt post (he's a bit nervous) but he's gaining a growing knowledge of how to fix and keep his mini going for the rest of his life if he wanted. What does making the forum more adult mean allowing things that exclude younger enthusiasts from enjoying the forum? yes i'm fully aware that he hears swearing on a daily basis and if i'm honest probably swears quite a bit himself! but that doesn't make it right and as a parent i have to make decisions on wether something is approprate or not and try and guide him in the direction of forums like this one that is friendly and more importantly appropriate for a broad age group. By that i dont mean this forums childish in fact it's a very balanced forum i think IMO. With regards to allowing MINI threads i'm very tolerant of other peoples opinions and if they like MINI's then thats fine by me,(as long as it's posted in the correct sections which seems to be the crux of the problem) however it does saden me a bit when threads increasingly turn bitter for what ever reason wether it's a valid point being made or not it gets lost in what comes accross as hatred! then its just a downward spiral of tit for tat! Phew! well theres my late night ramblings over with, sorry if non of this makes sense it's bit late and it takes me ages to type >_< lol!

What? No!

What would be in the adult section? just a thread where we can all vent and write swear words?!

The one thing I've never understood is why this is a family forum, as if young 10 year old impressionable children are updating their build restoration thread or asking for advice on engines?

If you are old enough to be active on this forum then you are old enough to understand that there are bad scary words out there.

I swear when I'm with my mates, I swear when I'm on my own, I swear when I'm getting my ass beat down on Call of Duty but I wouldn't swear in public or in front of my family. I've rarely gone to say a swear word on here sometimes before realising I can't.

I'm only still on this forum because I have been for so long and I've built up a reputation, friends and my build threads. I also watch a few other build threads on here and I wouldn't want to miss any updates.

I'm a member on RR and they don't have a swear filter. But I don't see any swear words. Maybe because they are all an older more mature bunch?

I feel fairly confident in saying that if the swear filter was lifted here, there would be bad words left right and centre.
