Model: Studio 2
Year: 1990
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

Engine runs fine, but when trying to engage gear, and let clutch out, no drive occurs. A whirring sound occurs when the clutch is released into gear, any ideas?

Checked the clutch, flywheel, and clutch hydraulics, these seem to be fine and working.

Worked previously for the 60 miles it has ran since the unit was put in the car.

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?

'89 Metro 1275, Verto Clutch.

Thanks in Advance
Sam :D

Has this suddenly happened ? Check if the arm on the wok is moving - or 'stuck out' holding the clutch released. Does the speedo register ?? If so - loss of drive after the gearbox so could be broken driveshaft/drive shaft come out of splines/cv broken or splines again/final drive pinion nut come loose inside the gearbox.......

Yes this happened without any warning no big bang or strange sounds. lever works OK and can feel pressure of clutch plate working. Had wok off in car but no signs of anything out of place. Driven plate firmly clamped. haven't checked if speedo cable turns yet - next job.

A similar thing happenrd to me, mine ended up being a worn crank and the flywheel keptt coming lose and braking the locating washer. it would start but had no drive. Best bet is to remoce bell housing and all the clutch and look at the state of the crank. If it is worn best bet is to try and shim the crank and then refit all clutch again and tighten the end crank bolt. Hope it Helps?, It sounds liike what happened to mine.
haha and mines a studio 2 too but with a 1293.

If the crank has spun on flywheel there is no recovery........ But the starter will just run the flywheel round without starting the engine........ so pretty sure it's not that.

Thanks for the replies Guys!
Checked the speedo cable last night, and it wouldnt go around with the engine off when pushed, but would when the engine was on, which leads me to believe its the diff :)

So, gonna have to take the engine and box out, and decide which final drive to use this time, 3:1 or 3:44.....

Well removed the engine and box this morning, and had previously consulted the Metro haynes manuel, which suggested that the nut on the pinion on the diff might have come loose, as this stated the same symptons.
Removed the end cover, to find the diff pinion nut as it should be, and when the flywheel is rotated, the diff and its outputs work fine.... :P

Pretty stumped as to what it could be now, any more ideas???

going to be taking the box off the block tomorrow, might know more then. :-

Took the gearbox off, and it works fine when rotated / used by hand , with nothing obviously wrong with it. It appears to be in good condition, with the teeth on the gears having hardly any wear on them. Im truly stumped as to what it could be now, any more ideas anyone??

As BMC has said....have you checked the CV joints. If all is well in the gearbox and diff then it must be the drive shafts or CV joints.

I tried the tasks Adam before we split the box and block  , and everything worked fine like it should, but when we previously tried engaging gear in the car, the pot joints didnt move. Since checked the linkage mechanism, which works perfect :)

The boxs appears in great conditon, like brand new with hardly any wear!! with no obvious damage. Going to put the engine back together again, checking each component very carefully, especially the clutch parts, and hope it works :trooper:

CV joint have been checked, but im off out to check them again in a mo, hopefully ill have abit more look with it!

When I acquired my Mini it was a non-runner owing to a sheared shaft coming out of one side of the diff.
