My advice:

1) Get the proper tool to fit the sealing strip - they're cheap and make the job much easier
2) Use KY jelly or "personal lube"
3) Get someone to help you, otherwise this happens...:

I used plastic bicycle tyre levers to help fit the screen into the seal.

The filler tool I found to be useless, easier to prise the seal apart for the filler with a suitable size screwdriver, although care is required to make sure it dosen't slip
