Just out of interest, I find that unmistakable whine from the straight cut gears irrisistable, But what is the law regarding them? Because they're not the quietest of things and whats the likelyhood of being stopped by the police - which could lead to the removal of them? same question relating to exhausts really. If it's got a silencer on can it still be asked to be removed?

Theres no reason why they would stop you for gears and their ignorance, they might end up asking out of curiousity but theres no reason for them to tell you to take them out...alternativly just get an SC box with no SC drops, drop it in 4th when you go near a cop :withstupid: thru drive in 4th your not on the gear set

haha thanks for the advice, i'd just argue it's part of the car to them anyway, but they can be a right pain sometimes. I best get saving for them then ;)

If the noise is excessive it will fail an mot, let alone get you pulled by the police, i forget the level though.

why would it fail an MOT when the testers dont need to take your car for a drive to test it... sc gears will only make any significent noise when moved for a long distance and when revved, so car park driving will be fine

thats what i was just thinking, but relating to the exhaust can you still be failed with a silencer on it, i read somewhere that there is no decibel limit, yet an opposing view said that the exhaust hasnt to be any louder than standard...*shrug* and another view said that it all depends on what the mot tester thinks. straight cut gears would only make the noise when in gear? they wont run the car in gear to test it will they?

I think that the figure quoted here was that there are currently just over 30,000 minis on UK roads. So therefore I think it's probably more likely to be "hundreds" of minis with straight cuts, as opposed to "hundreds of thousands"!! :withstupid:

Just declare it as a modification to your insurance company! As for the exhaust, you're certainly more likely to be pulled for a noisey exhaust so make sure everything else is in order

Ha-ha... I know the car well.... I don't know why but his has a very distinctive tone...

and back to the op....

No there is nothing in the law/MOT which restricts the level of sound emanating from the transmission, however your exhaust pipe is a different matter, I've had a mini fail an MOT because of the sound level from the pipe... so a straight pipe and a cherry bomb is not a wise idea...

The police can only measure noise levels (generally to test exhausts) when the vehicle is stationary, so they would have no way to measure the gears on the move. As above theough, exhausts can be tested

OMG!!! Has no one ever heard of over exaggeration to jokingly get a point across

Scamp never failed on exhaust, even when it was 128dB :withstupid: Then again the tester did smile when he heard it :(
