I've been behind some BMWs and Peugeots that seem to have LED tail lights as standard. A lot of the new buses have LED tail lights as well. I wouldn't expect them to be illegal if they're being fitted as standard.

Those vehicles went through type testing with LED rear bulbs fitted, yours didn't. Don't assume that the same rules apply to all vehicles on the road as they don't. Lots of vehicles go through type testing with arrangements of lamps and other minor details that would be completely illegal to put on a modified or self built car. Exactly how they pass the test I don't know but there must be some special rule for it.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but i'm a new mini owner her in the US (California) and my mini came with tinted tail lights.... I need really bright bulbs for the stop/tails and I looked at the link posted earlier in this thread and the product is no longer available.... I don't have a Haynes yet and no manual for the car so I don't know what kind of bulbs I need... can someone point me to the direct LED replacement for the Stop-tail light bulbs?

also... do you change the bulbs from the outside or the inside?... as the gas tank is in the way on the inside left of the boot

also..what bulbs are used?... mini mania says 1157's but I want to make sure

As long as it is a flasher purpose designed for LED lights and not just any old electronic solid state flasher it should work.

J-Lo, bulbs are changed from outside. There are three pozi head screws in the lamp lens to remove it. Careful with the gasket as it is easily torn and not readily available.

Don't know how you list bulbs over there and I don't recognise the number you have given but it is a 21/5 watt dual filament pear shaped bulb with offset pins if that helps.

thanks... according to your description.. that IS an 1157... If I had an actual number off the bulb I could cross-reference... sounds like it though

I think im going to look into gettin LED stop and tail lights other motorists just seem to not see our brake lights!!! hoping LED may catch their attention! i would like to fit a 3rd brake light i just dont like the look of them not aesthetically pleasing wonder if theres a discrete version about!

Erm, the whole point of a third brake light is to be indiscrete! The reason other people tend not to see Mini lamps is because of where they are and not how bright, they are the same brightness as all others. The third brake light is right in the eyeline of a driver behind.

I agree but im talking along the lines i dont want to see the third light in my car as in the light its self not the light emitted to warn other driver, i also do find that the LED lights do have a brighter light.
