i was taking to my brother, and we concluded the reason behind the price they fetch from coin lovers and the reason the bank of england want them back is, as they are undated they are directly effected by the increase in the amount a currency is worth.

for example, they say £100k 60 years ago is the equivalent of XX million pounds now.

so in the future these 20 pence pieces will be worth the present amount of a 20p which could be a whole heap, obviously this would take a long time and i dont know if we were right or not/

20p now isnt worth the same as 20p 70years ago with inflation the amount its worth changes dispite being 20p.

like when london had the olympics in the 1920's (?) it only cost them 2million quid to setup, which the nowadays is like £100million (figures used to make a point)

so in theory (we think) these undated 20p's are worth however much 20p's are worth at any given time, which in the future could be more than a present 20p.
