I recently got my hands on a MPI Cooper with Sports pack wheels and arches on. The log book just says Mini Cooper so can I asume its a Sports Pack?

Mini was on a V 99 plate............... ;)

A Cooper with a Sports pack is not a Cooper Sport. Cooper Sport was a specific model, and would be identified as such on the V5. The Sports Pack was just an option pack that could be added to any Mini between 1996 and 2000 when it was ordered.

Moved.

the only difference between a cooper sprotspack and a cooper sport are the boot badge. i have had a few of these late coopers, some original with the 'cooper sport' badge on the boot. they have all been marked as just 'cooper' on the logbook. thanks

The boot badge isn't the only difference. Cooper Sports also had silver roof, silver bonnets stripes, silver centres on the seats, a silver and black steering wheels, silver dashboards and an I.D. plaque inside the glovebox.

Only the 500's have the plaque inside the dash ;)

I thought it was only the 500s that had all the silver bits too?

My Cooper Sport says ‘Mini Cooper Sport’ on the V5C. It was registered in April 2000 and has all the platinum/silver bits but is not a 500.

the last mpi sportspack coopers all had silver leather/roof/stripes. these were badged cooper sport in most instances. the last 500 were identical but were called cooper sport 500, with a plaque inside he glove box to identify. prior to the silver roofed etc final sportspack coopers, some of the white roofed sportspack coopers also had the 'cooper sport' badge to the boot. i think it depends what was available at the time when there were putting the cars together.

Please don't stir up confusion, Cooper Sport DOES NOT mean Cooper with a sports pack. It's a specific model and was not assembled at random.

The cooper sport has the koni shocks and uprated rear subframe too.
The diff is different for the 13" wheels

My thoughts are also that the cam is different and the ecu program is mildly different? The cooper mpi often came with narrow arches etc to cover the 12" wheels. The same setup as the later mini seven etc
Coopers were sold with optional sport packages but where just never as good as the real thing.

The sprite spi for instance has the same engine as the cooper BUT the ecu program is different and the cam and engine compression ratio is different too.

The sportpack needed a different final drive for the 13" wheels and the steering rack was changed to stop the wider wheel fouling the inner arches.

Lots different from a cooper and cooper sport. not just arches and wheels as some would think.

If its not on the logbook... Its not a sport.

What's different about a cooper sport rear subby?

There are stiffening plates fitted. the most obvious are at the sides if you look behind your rear wheel. Thay go from the frame to the round cup section that holds the rubber spring.

I have one here that I have now powdercoated.

I have seen a couple of these on some standard coopers but deff not all. I'm guessing they were meant for the 13" wheeled sport but as Rover quality control was minimal they ended up all over the shop.

I had a mini once that had "Stan did this 98" scratched into the top metal dash rail section. Funny lot...

I have a Y plate ‘Mini Cooper Sport’ registered in March 01 and I was unaware of the of the modified rear subframe, they say you learn something everyday, this is mine for today :genius:
I have a question though about my car as It has metal John Cooper signature badges on the bottom of the doors, does anyone know if they were an optional extra and it could have left Rover like that or do you think the previous owner fancied some and just stuck them on ?
