I've got both drops and gears. they make a hell of a noise. think my neighbours hate them.

Remember when choosing drop gears they come in different ratios too.

as the gearbox is submersed in oil which dampens the noise.

not quite sure your wording is brilliant with this, drop gears are still in a gearbox

He meant the drop gears are not submersed in oil which they are not.

I like to think that I'm not a massive thicko but I'm still at a loss as to what I need to buy and what I buy and what work I do etc?

Sorry to be a pain.

I bought these today from MED. My mate runs them in his rally car. The noise is just exactly what your looking for. Posted Image
Drop gears are not in the gearbox by the way....they live in the transfer case behind the flywheel cover. A reasonably easy job to fit and cheaper than a sraight cut box.

So I need to buy a set of 'drop gears' and they will simply fit into the standard box already on the car???

So I buy the drop gears and then what? What kind of price is it to get them on the car...roughly?

That's a lot of money to pay for a nice noise. I assume you intend to fit these yourself? I am not sure it's all that easy for the less experienced. How do you measure the idler endfloat without having the engine and gearbox separated?

The kit I have shown above does not need the idler end float set as there are no shims. The roller bearing inside the idler gear does all the work so no beaings in the transfer case or gearbox for the idler gear..Much better.

Oh yes, that does look a better design. I assume they do these for the earlier and later gearboxes with different sized shafts?

A straight-cut close ratio 'box is great if you have a well-modified engine with a low final drive ratio. Great acceleration and super gear changing too.
But SC drop-gears on a road car, you might need ear plugs on any sort of journey over about 10 miles - I have SC everything and use ear plugs on the road sections. Too damn noisy for comfort and one quickly tires of them.
