The big-end journals look like 1.75" dia and the rods have the heavy caps, so it looks like a 1300 GT engine. In fact, it's just like my Innocenti 1300 engine with an 11-stud head, but with larger 33.5 mm inlet valves.

Do you need a remote gearbox for your car or are you planning to run a rod change?

Generally they are that easy to change I would install what you have in the car and then rebuild the GT engine at your leisure / budget.

i will put a rod change gearbox on the engine. i was thinking of putting the other engine in until the gt engine is built up, the car is far from ready for the engine as you can see from the picture.

would building the engine be a job i could do myself as the closest ive ever come to building an engine was a head rebuild on my first mini about 12 years ago.

If it was me I would clean and paint the engine I had (if the vital signs looked good) as an engine rebuild is one less job to complete to get it on the road !! :))

Invest in the Carver DVD of how to build a 1380 as it is a good step by step guide what ever spec you deciede.

Thanks for the advice sounds like a good idea will probably take the head of the other engine just to see what the bores are like because it's been sat in the garage for 3yrs It still turned over by hand but might be worth a look

Most Mk3 S has no tappet chests

That is wrong, the Mk 3 S had the AEG 312/AEG634 thick flange block

1300GT has ... S rods

That is also wrong, the GT crank has the larger (1.75") big end journals.

New cooper S engines with removeable tappet chest covers - not gold seal/silver seal - were still available after the Cooper S ceased production. I have one, as have others on other forums.

I cannot see any reason why a mk3 Cooper S would have left the factory with a solid block engine.

I don't think the base S engine shared anything of significance with the 1275gt or 1300gt

I know someone who had a J plate Mk3 'S' and it had a thick flange solid block and an EN16T crank with 'S' size journals and 'S' rods.

Look up the Moss 'classic mini' catalogue tech advice section page 9, all the part numbers are there.

Also, this engine number 12H/---/ is specified as '1275 Austin ADO16 & Allegro'.

12H/495F/ is a 1300 GT engine not an Allegro engine.

Why would BL mess about putting an EN16T Mk 3 1275S crank in a 1300 block when they were still building S engines in S blocks? The Mk 3 S crank and 1300 GT crank were made from the same forging.
