kats used to do this aswell, its the engine jumping about / hitting bulhead in some cases, fitted untimate top engine steady and check / tightened mounts.

steadies and mounts... aand if you have solid mounts, check the firewall is no starting to split.... but the most common one is the bracket which serves to hold the clutch pipe and the top engine steady to the bulkhead has parted company...

I got the exact same problem. Is it hard to change engine mount by myself at home? Since I'm located in South Korea and there are no garage specialize Classic Mini. Hell they don't even know what kind of car it is...

yeah mine did that it was the engine steady left hand side of engine, bolt snapped off in engine so had to get a repair bracket, still had some knocking noise(engine moving back an dforwards) so i fitted an ultimate engine steady, and its fine now!
to test if engines moving forward and back, get someone to rev ur engine whilst u watch the engine, it will probably move, hope that helps!

Looked at the engine steadies they seem ok, revved the engine up there was movement, is it not supposed to move at all, as the movement was very slight?

Cheers

If you blip the throttle really hard it will move slightly but it should be pretty solid if you try to move it by grabbing the rocker box and shaking. I know everyone loves to fit ultimate engine steadies but for all standard and most mildly tuned engines they really aren't needed. You may have checked the bushes in the steady bar but have you checked what the bar is secured to? The master cylinder base plate is pretty flimsy and can come loose or the hole in it that the bolt passes through can elongate in which case no matter how tight you do the bar up it simply won't hold. The lower part of this mounting that is welded to the bulkhead can suffer the same fate. The base plate is easy enough to replace or tighten but for the welded bracket it's going to need some more work. The way to stop this elongation damage starting is to keep the steady rod assembly in good condition all the time, once the engine starts to move a little the damage begins.

Vitruvian, yes you can easily do these jobs to your Mini with basic tools and precautions. Most things on a Mini are fairly easy to do at home if you have to.
