I was thinking about this the other day, why are minis money magnets?
If i had a normal car i would not spend as much money on it as i do with my mini.
Why are minis like that, i know i just want to make it my own but i dont understand why we spend so much on them.

Who else agrees/ has ideas.

yeah i agree, ive spent about a grand on mine in 6 months, cant help it, think its an addiction.
i vote all mini parts should be free, to help feed our addictions better!

You spend money because the bits are affordable, what other car can you name which provide that luxury... ?

i think guessworks hit the nail on the head there. there parts are fairly cheap when compared to other cars, and because they are cheap you want to buy more and more :dontgetit:

It's my only hobby - I spent £6k on the current one in 8 weeks last year getting it ready for the trip to IMM in Spain! Would do it again in a heartbeat!
I think the problem is, when something goes wrong you wnat to get it sorted asap as you don't want your "baby" to be broke! If we took our time and didn't rush things then I'm sure we would save money! Having said that, my pervious mini cost me £13k because I always paid for someone else to do the work! now I do it myself so save money that way........meaning I have more money to spend on parts!! :dontgetit:

Thats a very good point, they are cheap to modify and to repair, how many people also use them as a every day car? I do and its great fun when its running nice.

I suppose it does keep me from doing other things with the money.

Why do we spend the money.. well I think it is because it is worth spending on.

Buy a brand new car and you loose the VAT and a few thousand as soon as you drive it out of the showroom.

Mini depriciation..... not much if any

Another point is we generally love the minis.

If it were an old Ford Escort or something and needed welding etc tc you would just sell/scrap it..!!

If it were a Nova you could spend thousands doing it up and it would be worth.. well less that a bog standard one..

At least with the Minis you can re-coupe a fair whack of your outlay, but the joys of driving it out weigh the cost.

Or put it another way.. "THE FUN REMAINS LONG AFTER THE COST IS FORGOTTEN"

"THE FUN REMAINS LONG AFTER THE COST IS FORGOTTEN"

I have spent €1500 euro in 4 months on my mini and €5000 on the car after VRT and its worth every penny. Powersliding in a mini is just waht is all about and i work in Dublin city centre driving in traffice is just good fun :dontgetit:

Rock on! Its good being hardcore!
I love it.
The reason I spend money on mine is because its worth it. Its a very good shell and the engine is brilliant, espeically considering its done 104k.
I think its had about £2800 spent on it in about 18months, although about 1k of that was my mate paying it to basically have a new rear end after he crashed into the back of it.
However, they are cheap to run on a day to day basis. Nothing has ever broke the bank, like I spent £541 in 10 min at Huddersfield Spares once, a hell of a lot of money when you are 17/18, just on mods.
