Hi all, im new to the site so bare with me. i am just about to start fabricating a frame for an r1 RWD conversion similar to z cars design. My question is will the original mini drive shafts slot into a sierra 7" lsd and do they have to be shorter/longer to maintain the correct wheel base? I wanted a cosworth 7.5" diff but i have read that these accept bigger drive shafts and ones that are bolted via the flanges only? Does anyone know which lsd z cars uses? I am assuming they modify an oem product? What other options have people gone for??

Also, what size rose joints are used for the trailing arms, I already have some but they look slightly larger than z cars? I cant see this being a problem i am just curious as to what i can get away with.

The 7" lsd sierra uses 100mm lobro joints and the 7.5" sierra uses 108mm lobro joints neither of them are suitable for mini driveshafts. Unless you use a mini diff you will need to make/get custom driveshafts. Z cars used to use sierra stuff but as it became more and more scarce they have changed to a more modern differential, not sure what it is

Cheers David, can i weld them together? The only reason im asking is that welding hardens the steel making it more brittle/prone to cracking. Has anyones ever cracked from welding? I have access to a lathe so i could modify them so they were near perfect. Or would i have to start from scratch using the lathe. Harry.

I'm not a fan of welded driveshafts, but people have used them sucessfully, but then again I've seen a few broken ones, I suppose it's down to how well they are done, if I were to do welded driveshafts I would weld them together first and then slide a piece of cds tube over the welded joint and weld that

Not a bad idea actually, im coded so i know they will be welded properly and i think il try what you just said. Ive got to get a load of cds tube anyway for the roll cage and front and rear subframes so a little more wouldnt hurt. Im also going to try and merge the front and rear subframes to the roll cage to create one complete frame. Better handling? Who knows but its worth a go. Thanks.

i just rung up chris and got zcars diff and arms for mine
