Model: Mayfair 998cc
Year: 1984
Description of problem: The question I am wanting an answer for is how do I change to a cone air filter from the standard over the top air filter on a standard 998 engine? Do I need to take any bits off? If so which bits? Also I still have all the spongey rubbish on the bulkhead, been thinking of getting rid of this for a while, will it need to go with this cone filter? All info and tips welcome  also if you have pictures of how your cone filters are filtered that would be very nice, thanks Matt

just take the pancake filter of make sure you get a Hs4 carb Cone filter you can keep the bulkhead soundproofing on but I removed this just did this job the other day one tip though make sure you ajust the mixture as the new cone filter will effect the fuel to air mix

hope this helps

Thanks a lot! Is there nothing else to remover apart from the pancake filter? Looks a bit tight with all the spongey as well which will effect air into the filter? I know how to adjust the carb but how do I tell when it;s at the right mixture? Thanks for the help!

this filter comes of by undoing the nuts take it of put the little gaskit you get witht the new filter the the filter its a two minute job to tell you the truth I removed my Bulkhead soundproofing but it will fit with it , doesnt make that much difference when you remove it to the cabin noise and is a easy job aswell

as for the mixture some people leave it without adjusting it as it can be very difficult to make sure the mixture is correct but as ive put some other go faster bits on it im taking it to a rolling road where they set all that up for you making sure you get the most out of your engine while improving the fuel consumtion etc

hope this helps

Does this mean your filter is sitting on top or at the back of the engine facing backwards? There is a little bit off the back of the carb where the bolt through the pancake screws onto, I'm assuming that needs to come off to?
I work at a garage (all be it a valeter) they have an emissions tester, can this give me an indication to wether or not I have the right mixture?
Thanks again for the help!
