Good work Jonny, are you far off putting it into the car?

Good work Jonny, are you far off putting it into the car?

I am about two weeks behind with my updates :-)

Loom is in, Exhaust and Carb Manifold is on, Carb is on, O2 Sensor Positioned and Welded on, Fuel Pump plumbed in, Fuel Pump wiring nearly finished.

Need to:

  • Plumb in the Carb
  • Finish the wiring
  • Fit the Coil
  • Install Dizzy and HT Leads
  • Fit new Accelerator Cable
  • Fit new Choke Cable
  • Replace Rear Wheel Cylinders and clean / re fit rear brake lines
  • Fill Clutch and Brake Fluid and Bleed
  • Finish installing Oil Pressure Gauge
  • Install AFR Gauge
  • Re-Fit Dash

Start Car :-)

After some faffing around trying to fit some Riv Nuts (which I sacked off) I managed to mount the new Wing Mounted Solenoid.

ZzKYJAZ.jpg

I used this diagram to connect everything up:

4V9BMeF.jpg

Out of the factory, this car had an inertia starter and therefore a wing mounted solenoid, I have read various modifications on fitting a Pre Engaged Starter, like this one and settled on the simple version suggested here by Cambiker71.

I'd bought a new Battery Solenoid to Starter Lead and fitted it to the starter solenoid.

dH4wJJ2.jpg

All that's need now is the jump lead from the battery connection on the starter solenoid to the exciter terminal above.

c6WHLOK.jpg

I decided to carefully pull the insulation off of the spade terminal and clean up the spade.

Before connecting everything up.

Hopefully Iv'e read the modification correctly and once I fit the short jumper lead from the battery terminal on the Starter Motor Solenoid to the large spade, it should turn the engine over?

So, I didn't get many pics of the loom going in. Getting everything through the new grommet and through the bulkhead was indeed a mission, but a successful one. Then it was a matter of routing the cable correctly and getting things connected.

You'll need a battery connection tot he wing solenoid first  ;-)

Good work though - looks very tidy.

Next task was to start to sort out the internal wiring, made even more complicated because I had lost much of the info on my DIY Dashboard wiring :-(

First I re-routed the large battery lead.

cN67ybO.jpg

And the in the engine bay and onto the Wing Mounted Solenoid.

lqYhbmW.jpg

Whilst in the engine bay, I connected up the Fuse Box.

yRKu9qM.jpg

I got a little ahead of myself and test fitted the dash, but I should have sorted the wiring and added the new gauges first.

e7k7Qxq.jpg

I fitted a new (second hand) switch panel, but had an issue with the old choke not securing it to the dash?

ObfIvrB.jpg

As soon as you pull the choke the panel falls out.

hGbKSED.jpg

When I removed the loom I labelled everything up, however some labels just did not make sense.

cfSUZ9C.jpg

The 'Haz' connector should go to the Flasher or Indicator Relay (cannot remember which one sits in the dash), but there should be a second wire.

The others are labelled 'Rear Screen' and 'Wipers'?

Starting to come together.

A Light green/orange also runs to the heater blower motor switch as well as the wipers, so that could be that wire.
Connects to switch then other side of switch is green/yellow into the heater body.

I'm finding for a car with very little in the way of accessories it can be rather difficult understanding the wiring.

I'm using this diagram, it's the closest that I can find.

Looks like the switch panel you have is for the later choke cable:

I ordered a new Choke Cable from MiniMine and I have now fitted it, seems to have resolved the problem.

Finally the Gear Selector Mechanism is going back in. It was all cleaned up when I took it off, so it was just a question of greasing up where needed and reassembling it.

uT9mVpv.jpg

A nice dolop of grease in the selector housing itself.

I refitted the bracket with the old bobbins cleaned up with new fasteners.

fCaoQCg.jpg

And in it went.

MKiYewz.jpg

The roll pin was a new one and took some getting in.

Iv'e not used that wiring diagram before, as it said single instrument pack 1984 on? Mine has a twin gauge instrument pack and is 1982?
However, I have just looked at it and there are two green wires that go to the 'Direction Indicator Unit', which I guess is the flasher can under the dash? The other connection to the Direction Indicator Unit is Light Green (so is mine).

I made an update regarding my miss labelled wiring but it has messed up the thread.

So to clarify, the two green wires I had labelled Wipers should have been labelled Haz Relay and the orange / light green wire I had labelled rear screen, should have been labelled Tacho. Lord knows what happened that day.

Next step on the update was installing the Exhaust and Carburettor.

I laid out the exhaust LCB on the floor to ensure I new how it all fitted together. Then I attached the Ram Air Filter to the Carb.

It's getting a bot confusing having two threads going, this one and the other specifically on the engine. All of the exhaust manifold and inlet manifold is cover here

Next job, not engine specific was fitting the rest of the exhaust.

As I said in the above post, before fitting the exhaust manifold, I laid it out on the garage floor and joined it all up. This is when I realised I still needed the De Cat pipe that I had already been using with the RC40. I nearly sold it back along thinking I didn't need it :-)

MkCWKdQ.jpg

I took the opportunity to clean up the mating faces.

n998vgZ.jpg

The clamps at the end of the 2 to 1 piece needed filing down as the would not sit next to each other.

SWLLC6H.jpg

It was a tricky job lining it all up and getting it fitted, especially as I am doing this single handed laying under the car!! Eventually it all slipped into place.

EmaXmBB.jpg

RYrqaZr.jpg

TzwyA9W.jpg

X9HKZPP.jpg

I had to bend this plate to get it to fit on the Diff Output Housing.

YfvhQ48.jpg

After seeing that it all fitted together it all came off again to get cleaned up. Couple of small surface rust patches to sort on the RC40 and some leftover pieces of an old mounting bracket that someone had welded on needed to go.
